Talking She wouldn't have this problem in Saudi Arabia!

No, it's not Afghanistan's entry in the 1999 Miss Universe Pageant, it's just Sultaana Freeman, a Muslim mother and homemaker, trying to obtain a Florida driver's license without removing her veil for the identification photo.

P.S. -- Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Florida hot and humid? Just like Louisiana. Must be an air-conditioned car. Probably not even a registered Republican. Jeb-Bob's gotta watch out for that sorta stuff, ya know.

You can't tell me she "likes" wearing that thing. Not to mention when its hot and humid.

Seems like she would be beside herself with happiness be cause all women are not "required" to wear that get-up.

It seems to me that if she is that religious that she cannot remove the veil part of her burka for a driver's license ID photo, then she shouldn't even be considering driving anyway since it is considered sinful under strict Sharia law for women to drive or go out in public without their husband or an older male relative.

Saudi Arabia solves this problem by refusing to permit women to drive, the same solution the Taliban chose in Afghanistan.

One would think that she would be so pleased to be allowed to drive in this sinful country that she would be willing to remove her veil for 10 seconds to have her picture taken. As long as she obeys all the traffic laws she will probably never have to show it to a law enforcement officer or remove her veil again for ID verification. Unless, of course, she wants to cash a check at Safeway or buy booze at the Arab-owned corner 7-11. But then again checking accounts for women sound mighty sinful to me. Almost as sinful as women driving. Maybe even more so.

Ninong,

That particular Tusken Raider is in fact a homemaker from New Jersey whose conversion to Islam coincided with the need to cover her, as well as her children, from the intrusive eyes of NJ child services.

She broke the arm of a foster child in her care.

Her religious b.s.... I mean...commitment, intensified after police got her mug shot ...it's on courttv.com I think.

Schrocat,

You were right. Here's her 1998 mugshot sans veil: http://www.courttv.com/trials/freema...nveil_ctv.html

from the article...
Quote:
A statewide database called "David" allows troopers to instantly access a growing number of license photos from their patrol cars and motorcycles.

The lawyer suggested that the safety of the public trumped Freeman's individual interests, but the state would accomodate Freeman by allowing her to pose privately without her veil for a female photographer.

Marks said his client would not avail herself of that option.

"When will the state understand?" he asked. "My client will not be unveiling for any photograph."

With this decision, Marks contended that "you're driving people like Sultaana Freeman more underground than anything. It doesn't make sense to me."
(i bet it doesn't)

You are required to show a picture ID when your identity is requested by law enforcement. It's just not debatable...
I hope she keeps it up!
2 more months of screwing around with this stupid non-issue is going to subject her to a strip search...incarceration...and a trip to a place where women don't treat child abusers as equals.

UGH!

If my wife looked like that, I'd make her wear a veil too...

From the NY Times 6/14/03:

"Although the evidence wasn't permitted in court, the woman, Sultaana Freeman, was convicted of aggravated battery in Illinois, The Chicago Tribune reported, in the beating of her twin 3-year-old foster children. According to police reports, child welfare workers said she invoked religious modesty to hinder investigators from looking under the children's Muslim garb, where one daughter had a broken arm, and both were covered with bruises. The mother's mug shot was taken without a veil. At any rate, even religious pilgrims to Mecca have to have uncovered faces in their passport photographs."

Hey, she should look on the bright side. She'll have no trouble staying physically fit now that she'll be doing a lot more walking.

True!

Central Florida isn't notorious for "dry desert heat" either.

Micky,

Do you really mean that? Home is Illinois!

She's a native-born American who converted to Islam in 1997. She was convicted of felony child abuse in Illinois before she moved to sunny Florida where she hoped her sartorial whims would go unnoticed.
