Look at the tail. Vertical, not horizontal. Did someone say LUNCH!??!

I still think its a dolphin or a mammal of some sort.

I know that they often "Surf" on waves to save energy, and also; the animal seems to be lacking the typical fins between the Caudal Peduncle and the Dorsal...

Also if you consider the position of its body it seems that the tail fin actually is horizontal....

Talking

I think it's a dolphin, too.

Anybody who thinks it's a shark, I'll lay 10 to 1 odds it's a dolphin. Any takers?

Oh, by the way, before you put your money where your mouth is, you might want to check out these follow up pictures: http://www.surfshooter.com/DolphinInfo.html

Way cool. Had a bunch of us fooled. The angle sure made it look like the tail went vertical. Nice pics though, and great topic!

definately Dolphin

Refraction from the water makes the tail appear vertical.

besides I don't think sharks have the mental ability to surf, either that or they are to busy thinking about food

Sharks scare me more than my mother-in-law (well, almost anyways )

Check out this pic, it's a Hoax:

But this one is REAL:

when I was in Durban (South Africa) two years ago, they offered a White Shark Experience tour. They put you in a cage, and baited the water for Great Whites.

I was going to do it, but later I found out they don't make underwater diapers
Yup. I 'chickened out' of it!

Ha! I'm such a chicken that if I see a dorsal fin out of the water while I'm snorkeling, I wouldn't even bother to think if it's a dolphin or a shark. I would get a heart attack so fast, that it wouldn't even give me time to think if my life insurance policy is still good

I've always wanted to goto Cape Town South Africa and get in a cage and check out the Great Whites too.

Re: Shark or a Dolphin?

That bottom pic of the great white coming out of the water is real. NOT the one attacking the helo though.

Planet Earth series shows them coming out of the water as they were attacking the seals to eat. Real great series with fantastic footage.

Remember, when in doubt always check Urban Legends Reference Pages

The photo with the helicopter is a composite of two photos. The great white shark in that photo was photographed off the coast of South Africa and the USAF helicopter was photographed just west of the Golden Gate bridge.

The photo of the Golden Gate bridge is cropped to cut off the bridge just below the roadway and then it is inverted. That's the North Pier (Marin headlands side) of the bridge as viewed from outside the Golden Gate, so it should be on the left side in the photo, not the right.
