The U.S. has formally declared Saddam a Prisoner of War: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3917703/
So now who gets to try him for his crimes? I thought the administration was planning on turning him over to the Iraqi governing council? We can't turn over a P.O.W. to another country for trial. They don't bring up that point in the news article linked above but I suspect that's the real reason behind this move. I suspect the Bush administration was having second thoughts about having the Iraqi council try him. I don't think we should try him ourselves. If we don't want Iraq to handle it then I think we should get him to the Hague or a special international tribunal and get out of the picture as fast as possible. This is going to drag on forever, unless of course, they really are planning a U.S. military tribunal, which I believe would be a major blunder for obvious reasons. P.S. -- Obvious reasons might include this administration's reputation for deceit, distortion, misrepresentation, use of known forged documentation and gross exaggeration as exemplified by Colin Powell's last U.N. performance, which compares favorably to his record as I.G. for Lt. Calley's division when young Colin was just a wee captain doing his best to investigate all the "unfounded" reports of civilian massacres being reported by disgruntled E.M.'s. Colin decided it wasn't necessary to interview any of the letter-writing informers since they were mere lowly enlisted personnel, in fact, he didn't even bother to interview any company commanders. No need to talk to anyone below field grade, might result in comments he would rather not have to put in his report. Reminds me of how Forbes magazine chooses its best run companies list by talking only to the executives. The Chairman of PG&E, who was named by some organization (probably not Forbes) as one of the worst executives of 2003 just gave himself a $17 million "performance bonus" as part of an $88 million package of performance bonuses the board awarded top executives in spite of the fact that the company is in bankruptcy and the court just approved sticking the California ratepayers with $9 billion in extra costs over the next nine or ten years as part of the plan to exit BK. I couldn't help adding this this little tidbit in here since I know WG is such a big fan of PG&E. ![]()

WOW... got a lttle feeling in there Ninong. With all the latest news to come out and the Carnegie Report saying no WMD's were in Iraq at the time this war started, GW should be looking for cover. That report basically says that advisors or informants were told to report a "significant threat" even if they felt otherwise.
Personally I like the reaction of our president to 9/11 saying he would "smoke them out of their holes." And hold them responsible for their acts. I just wish "them" would be found so my friends can come home!!!! |

I thought we promised to rebuild Afghanistan? How's that little public works project coming along? Bechtel and Halliburton must be hiring like crazy with all these new contracts. GW insisted that there would be a new constitution in Iraq before they held democratic elections. Then a week later he changed his mind when it was explained to him that they might never agree on a constitution and certainly not in time to hold their elections before our elections. We need to send Katherine Harris over there to teach them how to prepare for an election. ![]()
