It happens! User agreement is strictly enforced on RC.

Hmmm... Maybe it's just me, or maybe cause I don't go there often, but how does one get kicked out of a public forum?

What's to stop you from Creating a new name and rejoining? And what comments were posted to facilitate the action?

Mike, everytime you login your Ip address is recorded and if you'd try to create a new name and rejoin your IP address would be blocked by the server. Next time you login on RC,read their user agreement. It is nothing different from other public forums but they are strict about you breaking it and will effectively ban you either for good or suspend you for certain length of time. I agree with this actions as sometimes people loose control and get into some downright nasty flame wars. There is no need for this and this is why Mods act quickly there.

I have heard of a few folks who have been banned from Reef Central but in every case that I have heard of the person was warned prior to being banned.

It is a private enterprise open to the public by invitation provided the applicant agrees to and abides by the board's rules of conduct.

There has been at least one celebrated case of a member who was banned, after repeated warnings, who then chose to reregister under several new names using one of those anonymous IP thingys. He eventually gave up and went away for good. He happens to be banned from this board, too. I believe we have banned only two people so far, actually one banned and one indefinitely suspended, not counting trolls who register to create havoc and are banned within minutes after posting nonsensical posts. That has happened a couple of times and is one of the reasons I no longer list my new email address on any of the boards. I don't feel like getting hundreds of emails thousands of lines each. Ask Scott about that guy. We think he was from the U.K. based on the prose he repeated over and over and over again in his "little" missives.

Thanks Ninong and Gene... I guess I take it for granted that BOTH these sites are private enterprise and subject to the less polite of the population. Not saying anything against you DLART89, but I have never actually heard of someone getting banned b4. Maybe you and that particular Mod bumped heads somehow. I have read some rather HEATED threads over there, I guess thats why I spend my time here. If you ask a question you get an answer, not a tirade from some A hole about how stupid the question was....

I don't mind the discussion about why someone may get banned from a site but please do not bother discussing your specific situation on another board.

Thanks,
Scott Z.

Banned From Db

Sorry that happened. Sometimes when we go against any establishment on their own websites (or elsewhere) they get a bit upset. Moderators have philosophies, opinions, and feelings. Some DBs (not to mention any specifics) are highly political and powerful enough to dictate trends, sometimes bad ones IMHO, in the hobby and industry at large. DBs should be about hobbyist fellowship and exchange of information toward the end of successful reef keeeping Friendly is better, of course, but there are lots of nut jobs in this hobby like everywhere else. I've been personally threatened and slandered on one DB (not to mention specifics) by someone who was simply malicious. This individual was subsequently banned by the owner once my case was made. Never heard another word from the guy. DBs are are a fantastic asset for individual hobbyists and those of us in the business looking for trends in the hobby and needs/wants of the consumer. The good news is that 99.9% of reefers are the highest quality people in the world. A few can be quite a PITA at times but are usually responsive to honesty and sincerity

At times, it does become necessary. As Ninong mentioned, we had one person register here that attemtped DDoS (deinal of service attacks) attacks on the board and the host via e-mail; although the attempt was poor. I don't remember what the line was but it was a one liner posted thousands of times inside of one post, or one e-mail and that prompted us to immediately ban the IP addess of the user. Boy it sure was annoying to wait for several minutes for 1 e-mail to be received and to discover is was that nonsense.

Question Question for a moderator

I understand banning someone for ridiculous, childish things like you are talking about. But is it possible that someone just has a bad day and takes it out on someone else? Also, I sent an email to the webmaster and explained the situation. I was told not to post comments about companies that financially support RC unless I was in a specific forum. This is fine, I no longer posted anything about the company. The problem came in as the moderator did not simply tell me not to post, he said something to the effect of "you will listen or threats will turn into actions, there is no freedom of speech here". I know all of this stuff has to be saved somewhere, for at least a short while. Oh yeah, and all of this except the 1st comment was done via PM's, between myself and the moderator (nanook)!!!
PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK!

As has been mentioned in this thread already, each "board" is a private enterprise and can be managed in any way the administration decides. I will not speculate about the situation that occured as the outcome will be useless. If you have specifics that you would like to discuss, the only people that it is worth discussing with is the persons directly involved.

I'm not trying to discourage you by no means, just stating that coming here and speaking poorly of another site or it's management is useless and always leads in a bad direction.

Regards,
Scott Z.
