Arrow Pictures of 4-ft alligator in our backyard!

Last week we caught a 4-ft long American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) in our backyard. My brother-in-law looped a rope around its neck and locked it up in the pump room next to the swimming pool while he ran inside to get his son to help him dispose of it. They taped it's mouth closed with duct tape and took it for a boat ride on the Natalbany river about 1/2 mile from our house. After removing the duct tape and the rope, they released it into the river. That river has lots of gators.

The first picture shows the gator inside the pump room and the second picture shows my brother-in-law holding it with a towel over its head. This was before they taped it's mouth shut so my brother-in-law is holding it pretty firm.

Shoot and we thought getting an occasional Possum was bad!

Your brother-in-law looks like he has it under control, although his clothes aren't as snazzy as the Crocodile Hunters.

Well, he didn't have it completely under control because he ended up with a slash across his calf (nothing serious) when he was helping my nephew get it in a duffle bag for the boat ride. They already had its snout taped shut and they were careful to avoid its claws but they didn't pay enough attention to its tail.

I guess he needs to watch some more Steve Irwin to get the technique down.

Crikey!

About how much did it weigh? I'd hate to find one of those lounging in or near my pool.

I'm not sure how much it weighed because I wasn't about to volunteer to hold it for the camera. My brother-in-law says he thinks it weighed about 25-30 lbs.

It was a good 75-100 ft away from the pool when the dogs started barking at it. At least they had enough sense to not take on something with a mouth bigger than theirs.

Wow!! That is super cool George! I am glad to hear your family simply relocated the little fellow.... I would have expected no less from your family! I am sure alot of folks would have simply shot the little fellow or clubed it with a shovel or something! Score 1 for the dogs, I have always said Dogs are the best alarm system money can buy!!

Gene,

Alligator dishes are quite common down here. I don't believe I have ever tasted it but the way they cook jambalaya down here there's no telling what's in it and it's hard to tell from the taste with all the cayenne pepper. Everyone says it tastes like chicken.

George,

I'm a big fan of cajun cooking but alligator dish I had tried did not impress me much.Meat was very similar to the shoe leather in texture Shef even said that he soaked it in the yougurt for a while(after I complained).Although, I agree, you can never be sure what's in that jambalaya I do love it,though.

I'm not a big fan of cajun cooking but my brother-in-law is. I prefer creole cooking. There is a big difference. Cajun cooking is entirely too spicy for me; creole cooking has more classical French influence.

George,

To be honest,I like them both I suppose I just love to eat

While in South-Hampton Princess hotel in Bermuda we had a pleasure to have dinner at the Newport Room( which based entirely on French cuisine) and I was blown away with the shef's creations there. 5 different courses with 5 different wines, including very nice Port with desert. Need I say more?

I suppose I should be more careful when I post something about my eating preferences to escape quotes like that.

My nephew moved to Weston (Ft. Lauderdale) three months ago and his house is only about a block from the Everglades National Park!

I told him he should feel right at home with the high humidity, alligators and gigantic mosquitos!
