Anything that you purchase will have to be declared when you cross the border coming home. You CANNOT bring anything protected by CITES back without very expensive permits that take about six months to get. So that means all SPS and LPS are out of the question because they are protected. You would have to check with either the U.S. or Canadian federal governments first to determine exactly what you can move across the border without permits. Lots of luck on that one! It could take you months to get a straight answer.

lol first of all i forgot to mention that i will be driving there, and ive been across the canadian border hundreds of times, all they do is ask what you have in your car, it would be VERY easy to just not tell them i have something, in particular a coral frag or some inverts. thats basically what i want to buy, so definetly no fish, i wouldnt take a chance of them dieing in a long 9 hour car ride.

In the meantime, I'll look up the penalties for smuggling CITES protected species across international borders -- just in case -- so we won't be wondering what happened to you if we don't hear from you for a few years. ![]()

"The agreements between the countries involved in CITES are enforced in two ways. The first is that trade or possession of CITES protected animals can lead to penalties such as fines or jail time. The second is the animal can be confiscated and returned the country of origin (U.S. International Trade Commission)."
Hmmm... I wonder if the size of the frag matters? Maybe if it's a very small frag you will only get a $1,000 fine and a couple of weekends picking up trash on the Interstate. ![]()

haha, ive gone through the border so many times, and they never once checked our car for anything, all they do is ask what we have in the car and we tell them oh just a few bottles of alcohol and were on our way.

I have been across the border exactly twice. Going on a trip with my High School class, on the way into Canada No problems, coming back the US customs officer passed by 4 people on my bus of non caucasion decent and then asked my friend Carlos for his ID and or passport. Just so happened Carlos was our foreign exchange student. He had left his passport at the hotel. We were refused entry to the US until he could provide valid documentation... Sooner or later you WILL run into the same type of customs official, I would hate to see your PARENTS be troubled for such a small gain.

Last year, my husband and I went across the border for our anniversary... Just wanted to spend a nice day away from the kids and house, you know, just get away from the usual crap. Well... we had our birth certificates, since they are adamant about that nowadays, specially since 9-11.... but apparently that wasn't good enough.
They actually made us pull over, and detained us for 3 1/2 hours! Just because our "reason" for going there wasn't good enough! They thought it was 'suspicious'. I used to love going to Canada..... I don't think I can feel that way anymore tho, they really gave us hell, acting like we were some sort of terrorists... They even searched my car, tore up everything, looked under the seats, thru our suitcase, the trunk, they even went thru my husbands camera case! And then left everything all lying scattered about thru the car. I have been to Canada many many times in my life, since I live in Michigan, less than half an hour from the bridge/tunnel..... but man, they're gettin a bit crazy now! (damn the terrorists/a**holes that ruined it for the rest of us!) You're very wise to accept the advice offered on this one Reefer... Those customs people are very hard to predict nowadays!

wow sorry about your incident with the canadian border man. i am most likely not going to buy anything there becuase it would be to much of a hassel bringing it back, andi might kill it by having it out of water for to long.

David,
If you decide to bring "anything" back with you, be sure to place a copy of the Koran on your dashboard. I have heard that that is immensely helpful in expediting things. ![]()
