    Unhappy Gmc Vs Chevy

Does anybody know...if there is any difference..between the GMC or Chevy? Are they built different? is the GMC a heavier duty unit? Are the suspensions better? Are the bolts they use to build them....bigger? There has to be something that is different.
    Thank you, Regards, Keith

They are identical unless you specify different equipment. They are built in the same plant and sometimes the workers will even accidentally install something with the wrong logo, such as a Chevy steering wheel on a GMC or vice versa. They have slightly different trims but the basic parts are interchangeable.

What are you talking about anyway? Pickup trucks or SUVs? Not that it makes much difference.

I work at the Flint Metal Center for GM, and YES they are IDENTICAL other then trim options. We have a couple of presses that crank out 12 parts per MINUTE things like the ROOF of a full size Chevy/GMC truck. Also floor pans for Yukons and Hummers, bet you didn't know those were the same part did you?? I didn't. We also turn out parts like door panels and other smaller parts. If trim doesn't matter and the Chevy is cheaper, get the Chevy...

I don't suppose you guys are old enough to remember this, but back in the 1970's there was a big stink when some Oldsmobile customers found out that their 350 cubic inch engines were manufactured by Chevrolet instead of Oldsmobile. At that time, the V6 engines were all manufactured by Buick and the 350 cu. in. V8's were manufactured by both Oldsmobile and Chevrolet. They were identical but manufactured in different plants.

For some reason, this turned out to be a very big deal with the public when it got out. It seems the public at that time was under the illusion that each division manufactured all of the components for their particular brand. When the press found out that thousands of Oldsmobiles had engines that came out of a Chevrolet plant, all hell broke loose. They didn't seem to mind the fact that all of the V6 engines came out of a Buick plant but they were outraged that their Oldsmobile's 350 cu. in. V8 engine was produced in plant with the Chevrolet name on the building. Within weeks a settlement was reached (as a result of a class action lawsuit) that required Oldsmobile to refund $750 to each Oldsmobile owner whose car's engine was built in the Chevrolet engine plant. That was a very large refund at that time considering the cost of cars then.

After that they started showing the origin of the engine on the Monroney sticker along with the final assembly point. The truth of the matter is that today, some domestic cars have more foreign components than some foreign cars! Parts are manufactured all over the world and cars are assembled all over the world. Your Chevrolet might be put together in California or Michigan or it might be put together in Canada or Mexico. Your Mercedes might come from Stuttgart or it might come from Alabama. Your BMW might come from Munich or it might come from South Carolina and it might have been designed in Germany or it might have been designed in California. And Rolls-Royce is owned by BMW. The truth is that all Rolls-Royce cars have had BMW engines since the early 1990's.

Ford and General Motors have bought out most of the other manufacturers out there except for the three largest Japanese brands. You would be amazed at the similarities between the newest Jaguar models and certain Fords -- identical platforms in one particular model. The prices, however, are not identical.

You mean the X-type and the Taurus??? LOL I have the Taurus, my soon to be brother in law the X-type... He has a 5 speed I have the automatic. He has All wheel drive, I have front wheel. I THINK his 3.0 litre V-6 is 230 HP, and my 3.0 litre is 200 HP. Although they share the same platform those 2 have enough difference to at least justify some of the cost difference, along with leather vs cloth stereo dual climate controls etc etc...

With the GMC Chevy thing... SaME TRUCK!

When Ford bought Jaguar, they had no idea how antiquated and crumbling their infrastructure really was. It has cost them a fortune (probably more than $2 billion) to try to salvage the marque. The only thing Jaguar had going for it was its racing reputation and its Connolly leather interiors. Unfortunately, Connolly went out of business a couple of years ago. There is absolutely nothing to compare with sitting in a brand new Aston Martin or Rolls (or Jag or Ferrari) and smelling the Connolly hydes. Well, there used to be nothing to compare. Connolly went out of business in 2002. You might be able to get matches for Rolls and Aston Martins because they used to keep extra matching hydes in storage for every car they ever made but I'm not sure if that still holds true now that Aston Martin is owned by Ford and Bentley and Rolls are owned by Volkswagen AG and BMW respectively. BMW owned Land Rover for a few years but it was a money pit, so they dumped it on Ford.

(That was a really nasty battle, the sale of Vickers. BMW's bid had been accepted and it was supposed to be a done deal and then all of a sudden it was announced that they were selling out to Volkswagen for a slightly higher bid. BMW told VW they could drop dead if they thought they would continue supplying them with engines and then they told them to forget about ever using the Rolls Royce name again since BMW held the rights to the name and had no intention of ever letting VW use that name! )

The new Rolls Royce is almost all BMW now, it's just painted and assembled in England: BMW World - Rolls-Royce

I've been out of "the business" for about six years now so I'm not exactly up to date on what's going on but I believe Ford is using "a lot" of Ford components in the Jaguar line, which was the whole idea in the first place.

    Brook,

This thread is four years old.

You may think there is a difference between GMC and Chevy but you're wrong. Please read my replies above.

I have no idea how long you have been in the "Used Cars" business, as indicated by your commercial link in your signature, but I was in the car business for more than 35 years (includiing several years with Chevrolet) and I know what I'm talking about.
