"Largest Aquarium in the world"

I found this on another site and thought it was pretty neat.
here is the write up and link.

"Water is the architectural theme of the complex and AquaDom, at an impressive 16m deep and 11m in diameter, is the highlight of this experience. The aquarium has 26 acrylic panels bonded together seamlessly for the outer cylinder and 15 panels for the inner cylinder. Holding 264,000 gallons of saltwater, it is stocked with 100 different species and a total of 2,500 fish. The variety of fish has been specifically chosen due to the different depths at which each will swim within the aquarium, which is raised 8m above the ground for visitors to admire. "

The link I supplied above was supposed to take you directly to the aquarium but it isn't working.

You can find it by following this link

Interesting, but that's a very tiny aquarium when it comes to the "Largest Aquarium in the World" category. Perhaps you meant to say that it is the world's largest cylinder aquarium? http://www.icm-corp.com/aquaDom.htm

There are several public aquariums that exceed 1,000,000 gallons. When I posted the pictures of this aquarium with whale sharks swimming in it, it was the largest in the world at that time (2-1/2 years ago) but I don't think it is still the largest. Whale Shark in tank.

There are a couple of aquariums in Spain that are very, very large and I think the city of Moscow is supposed to be building the new "largest aquarium in the world."

P.S. -- Back in the 1980's when the Monterey Bay Aquarium was completed, I believe it's 1,000,000 gallon outer bay exhibit was the largest aquarium in the world but that's no longer true today.

In my opinion, two of the best public aquariums are the National Aquarium (Baltimore, MD), and the Sydney Aquarium (Darling Harbor, Sydney - they have a great shark exhibit).

The Monterey Bay Aquarium focuses too heavily on "local" displays, and really dosn't have enough tropical coverage.

They had no tropical coverage at all when they first opened and the only reef display they have right now is very small and part of the children's wing. That's because they are designed to be a "local" aquarium. They use natural seawater from Monterey Bay. It is unfiltered at night to let in plankton and filtered during the day for clarity. It's still a pretty nice aquarium as long as you don't expect anything tropical. The new white shark is cool: http://www.mbayaq.org/ I saw her in September 2004, just a couple of weeks after she was placed in the outer bay exhibit. That's the only white shark in captivity anywhere in the world!

I'm anxiously awaiting the new Steinhart Aquarium at the new California Academy of Sciences. The old buildings were razed and they are in the process of building a new, ultra-modern facility. They had a 6,000-gal coral reef exhibit in the old building and they have a 20,000-gal coral reef exhibit in the temporary quarters on Howard Street.

I'm not sure how large the new aquarium will be but it should be nice regardless. The original Steinhart was one of the oldest aquariums in the country and it still had a lot of nice exhibits, although most of them were freshwater. They had the roundabout that was saltwater and the 6000-gal coral reef exhibit. The new academy building is really out of this world: http://www.calacademy.org/newacademy/newbuilding.php It's scheduled to open in 2008. I can't wait.

The Waikiki Aquarium has some nice exhibits but it's a rather small, rather old facility. They have done a lot of good work there: Waikiki Aquarium - 12 pics

Ninong:

I used to visit the Steinhart frequently when I lived in Northern California - I didn't realize that the facility had been razed. I'll have to check out the new facility when it opens. Another small but enjoyable puplic aquarium is the one operated by Scripps (I forget the name of the aquarium) in La Jolla, CA.
