Arrow Support for Public Broadcasting:

Email message I just received:

__________________________________________________ ___________________
Tuesday, June 21, 2005

NOVA usually sends e-mail bulletins only when we have program
information to tell you about. However, we thought you might want to
know about proposed funding cuts now before the U.S. House of
Representatives, which pose a serious threat to public broadcasting,
including programs like NOVA.

The House Appropriations Committee is proposing more than
$220 million in funding cuts for public broadcasting, effectively
a 45 percent reduction of public broadcasting's federal financial
support.

The House is scheduled to vote on these cuts this week -- as soon as
Thursday, June 23rd -- so it is critical that your members of
Congress hear from you today. For many years, we in public
broadcasting have relied on our friends and fans for financial
support. Now we are asking you to make your voice heard and let your
congressperson know how you feel about the proposed cuts. No less
than the future of public television and radio is at stake.

For details on how you can help, visit www.pbs.org/takeaction.

Please be assured this e-mail represents a special circumstance. As
usual, you will continue to receive e-mail bulletins when we have
program information to share.

Thank you,
Alan Ritsko
Managing Director, NOVA

Too bad the Republicans want to slash funds for public broadcasting. It wouldn't be so bad if the money was going to go for vest armor plates for our boys who are in harm's way in Iraq but it will probably be used to cover the multi-billion dollar subsidies the administration is giving the major oil companies to help them build new refineries. Even though they are making money hand over fist thanks to the skyrocketing price of oil, they refuse to build new refinery capacity over here unless their friends in the White House come through on their promises.

Oh, well... What goes around, comes around. Sooner or later the pendulum will swing the other way, and they better be ready to duck!

Since PBS has recieve an endowment by Mrs Koch upon her death (MCDonalds Heir) of almost a 1/2 trillion dollars.

This reduction in federal funding will not reduce the type or level of programming currently or will be offered by PBS over the next 100 years.

My understanding is that the money will go towards education paying teacher saleries, building new schools suppling study material for low income students

Nothing but reality TV round the clock, non-stop! No need to pay screenwriters or actors!

Who wants to marry a millionaire? How about "Who Wants to Adopt Me?" Ten cute orphans compete to see which of them the nice, wealthy suburbanite couple will adopt. The home viewing audience gets to call in and vote. Then the next week, we get to see which cute little tyke gets the ax and goes crying off the stage. Wouldn't that be special?

How about "Who Most Deserves a Kidney Transplant?" Same format except that not all of the contestants would be expected to live long enough to see the final outcome of the contest.

Where did you hear that, Fox News?

I guess you mean Joan Kroc and she left $200 million to National Public Radio.

Over the next 100 years! Wow! That's impressive. How do you figure that?

Since when did the federal government pay for building new schools or paying teachers' salaries? I thought schools were built by the local school boards and teachers were hired, fired and paid by local school boards? Besides, Bush has been wanting to abolish the Department of Education for years.

Yes, it will. To make matters worse, he has a lot of immitators now on CNBC and some of the other "networks." They're all trying to be as opinionated and big-headed as Bill O'Reilly. But not to worry! No one will ever outdo the original BIG GIGANTIC HEAD himself. Except maybe Rush.

I stand corrected at time the line items get skewed.

NPR received: 200 million
PBS received: 150 million
Notre Dame: 100 million
Unversity of San Diego: 100 million
Salvation Army: 105 million

then various other organizations received smaller amounts. So instead of 1/2 trillion it was a 1/2 billion.

As far as the 100 year financial projection that comes directly from their annual financial report submitted in 2004 to the Department of Education and FCC. This is why any reduction in funding to PBS will be redirected by the Department of Education to the area's of teachers saleries, construction of new schools and providing study materials to low income students.

Then let me ask you this question, where do school board(s) get their financial budgets? answer from the State. The State then submits a budget request (based on the requests submitted by the various school districts in that state) to the Department of Education who in-turns allocates money back to the State to be distributed back to the various school districts.

Obviously this moderated forum only cares about pushing the moderator(s) political aganda. Left wing of course

As far as I am concerned, I did not join a non-political forum to have a biased left wing democrate push his politics on me.

So this will be my last post in this forum. I will still post in other "Saltwater" forums but not here.

Have a great day with your politics - I'm personally glad that the majority of voters in this country do not agree with your view points and that we are not run by the likes of Gore, Kerry, Clinton, Kennedy who have decided that their party is going to be the party of obstructionism. All they care about is filerbustering and not doing the business of this nation.

So you can follow-up any way you want - I simple will not view this forum or respond anything posted here.

That's a lot less than $500 billion but I believe your numbers are still off. I don't believe Mrs. Kroc left $150 million to PBS. I believe she left $5 million to a single PBS affiliate, San Diego's KPBS. Actually she left nothing to PBS itself.

I know she funded a peace institute and gave large gifts to Notre Dame and other universities but I believe the bulk of her bequest, some one and a half billion dollars, went to the Salvation Army. She had been giving generously to the Salvation Army for many years. She gave them $90 million many years ago.

School funding must work differently in your state that it does in California. In California I got hit for a $16,000 add-on to the property the last time I bought a new house -- to cover the cost of new schools. That was in addition to the outrageous state property taxes. The reason that some local school districts are always broke and others are overflowing with money is because schools are funded locally. That's why the school district that a house is located in can make a big difference in it's resale value.

By the way, this particular forum has nothing to do with the rest of the board. It's for the discussion of anything but reefkeeping. Some of us might be inclined to take notice of information that we consider incorrect.

P.S. -- I just googled the words "Joan Kroc and Salvation Army" and it turns out that my estimate of $1.5 billion is correct: http://www.usatoday.com/money/2004-0...donation_x.htm

I think Fox News needs a few extra fact checkers. That Bill O'Reilly certainly has a way with words, doesn't he? Too bad we won't be able to go on that Caribbean cruise with him this November. I was saving up for that. :slap:

Arrow Update:

Eighty-seven Republicans joined all of the Democrats in the House to reject some of the proposed budget cuts that were being pushed through by the Republican controlled House Appropriations Committee. They restored $100 million of the cuts but that still leaves more than $100 million in other cuts in place. At least it's better than what the Republican leadership was trying to do.

Arrow Another one bites the dust:

Last Thursday the Corporation for Public Broadcasting fired Kenneth Y. Tomlinson, the right-winger Bush crony and close friend of Karl Rove, after an Inspector General's report critical of him. Now they're investigating him for misuse of federal money and the use of unqualified employees. Hey, if that's a crime, they could nail the entire Bush team.

The New York Times is reporting tomorrow that he is the subject of an inquiry into accusations of misuse of federal money and the use of phantom or unqualified employees, officials involved in that examination said on Friday.

In recent weeks, State Department investigators have seized records and e-mail from the Broadcasting Board of Governors, officials said. They have shared some material with the inspector general at the corporation, including e-mail traffic between Mr. Tomlinson and White House officials including Karl Rove, a senior adviser to President Bush and a close friend of Mr. Tomlinson.

Mr. Rove and Mr. Tomlinson became friends in the 1990's when they served on the Board for International Broadcasting, the predecessor agency to the board of governors. Mr. Rove played an important role in Mr. Tomlinson's appointment as chairman of the broadcasting board.

The Federal government supplies only 8.3% of funding for elementary and secondary education. Here are the facts:

Nobody should fall for the fiction of "dedicated funding" for education, senior citizens, or anything else. It has been used to justify casino gambling, increases in Social Security taxes, and more. Government applies the dedicated funds to the dedicated purpose and then takes the money it would have spent there anyway and uses it for something else.

Up to this point, the Federal government has specialized in unfunded mandates, such as No Child Left Behind. The testing required by this act has drained money from real education and is not paid for by the government. The high school where my wife teaches must spend $220 per student for just one mandated test.

The various state lotteries are big on telling you that you're helping fund education. In California, with the biggest lottery operation of all, about $1 billion a year goes to K-12 education funding. That represents only about 2% of the total education budget and they are still grossly underfunded.

The money from state lotteries is only a drop in the bucket and the politicians simply withhold that amount of funding from the general fund anyway. It's not really extra money for extra projects like they would like us to believe.

Just look at what some states did with their tobacco settlement money. It was supposed to go for health care costs related to smoking and to funding anti-smoking advertising. Some states, like California, do an excellent job promoting anti-smoking advertising but many states used virtually all of their tobacco settlement for other purposes.

I guess this is sort of off-topic but what the heck!
