Press Release: PFA Presents Tar & Feather, Inc.: A Liberal 10-Step Plan for Judicial

June 20, 2005

WASHINGTON - In anticipation of a potential Supreme Court vacancy this summer, Progress for America - the leading conservative group working on this issue - has researched and compiled "Tar and Feather Inc: A Liberal 10-Step Plan for Judicial Character Assassination."

With the same liberal extremists in leadership since 1987, we can anticipate the same ten steps that People for the American Way, Alliance for Justice, National Organization for Women and others will take to smear President Bush's Supreme Court nominees. The ten steps will be a carbon copy of the other negative campaigns against SCOTUS nominees. Over the next few days, Progress for America will present the ten steps that you can expect to see if and once a Supreme Court vacancy is announced:
Step 1: Before a vacancy is announced whip your membership into a frenzy with overblown rhetoric...

PFAW's Ralph Neas: "with one more right-wing nominee, more than 100 Supreme Court precedents could be overturned" (BusinessWeek, 6/20/05)

AFJ's Nan Aron: "igniting a firestorm of opposition around the country" and "a fight that will shape our lives for decades" (AP, 5/30/05)

LCCR's Zirkin: "we are in the fight of our lives" (Washington Post, 3/13/05)

Further steps will be announced each day.

"Tar and feather" has such a nice ring to it, don't you think? Sort of nostalgic.

Bring back the good old days!

"Tar and feather" sounds like something from the days of Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) and before Brown v. Board of Education (1954). You know, those days! When they used to tar and feather certain people.

Sounds like something David Duke might say.

PFA Launches First Comprehensive Campaign in Preparation for Potential Supreme Court Vacancy

WASHINGTON - Today Progress For America Inc. (PFA) will launch a $700,000 grassroots and advertising campaign to warn the public that in the event of a U.S. Supreme Court vacancy, liberals and some Democrats will unleash a disinformation campaign with distorted attacks against any judicial nominee.

"Progress for America does not know who President Bush will nominate in the event of a Supreme Court vacancy this summer. But we do know what everyone else knows that liberal attack groups are hungry to smear almost any potential candidate for the Supreme Court who doesn't meet their left-wing, extreme litmus test," said Brian McCabe, president of PFA.

"We urge liberals to give genuine consideration instead of instant attacks to any potential U.S. Supreme Court nominee," McCabe added.

The television and radio ads (titled "Get Ready") are backed by a substantial buy on all Washington, DC cable news networks and WTOP 1500 AM radio between Wednesday, June 22nd and Friday, July 1st. This DC-focused buy is supplemented by targeted national ad placements on CNN and Fox News.

"Get Ready" is backed by a detailed research paper which documents the liberal coalition to smear judicial nominees. The paper is entitled "Tar & Feather, Inc.: A 10 Step Plan for Judicial Character Assassination" and is available to the public at www.UporDownVote.com.

"Get Ready" explores past liberal attacks on former Supreme Court nominees and cites newspapers that called these liberal attacks a "smear", "dishonest" and "ugly". The ad quotes DNC chair Howard Dean saying Republicans "never made an honest living in their lives" and U.S. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid calling President Bush a "loser" and a "liar." The full ad and documentation can be seen at: www.UporDownVote.com.

Progress for America, Inc. ("PFA") is a national grassroots organization dedicated to supporting a conservative issue agenda that will benefit all Americans. PFA is the leading conservative group working for an up or down vote on President Bush's judicial nominees, including a potential U.S. Supreme Court vacancy. PFA has pledged an initial $18 million to combat dishonest attacks on any U.S. Supreme Court nominee.

Spending $3.6 million, Progress for America recently led a similar effort with a national and grassroots team in over 15 states to promote an up or down vote for Priscilla Owen and Janice Rogers Brown. Ralph Neas, president of the People for the American Way, said Priscilla Owen had an "extreme judicial philosophy" and that Janice Rogers Brown was "unfit to serve," and spent a reported $5 million to block their confirmations. Despite these attacks, Owen and Brown were recently confirmed by the U.S. Senate to lifetime appointments on the Federal Court of Appeals.
