Hurricane Ophelia closes in on N.C.
Bring it on girl and give me your best shot.
This maybe my last post for awhile - I live on the coast of North Carolina just above The Outer Banks of North Carolina (Nags Head, Cape Hatteras) with my property on the water. Wrightsville Beach which is about 4 hours south of me is starting to feel the effects already (65-85 mph with heavy surf conditions). I am beginning to see early flooding of my property. We're taking bets here to see how much of the property goes under water. It's kinda strange to be able to sit on your deck with your fishing poll and catch fish right on your property or have a boat tie up to the foot of your stairs. Its always fun this time of year. I get to secure the boats and house, get the propane tank filled (ever try grilling during a hurricane, its an adventure) , stock up on flash light batteries, canned food, fill the coolers with lots and lots and lots of ice, beer and water, break out the generator make sure all my fuel cans are filled. Then sit back and relax and take their best shot. Its called a Hurricane Party. So party on and I'll be back ![]() |

The mass exodus begins
State of Emergency with mandatory evacuation orders have been issued for my county.
The mass exodus of tourists and locals begins on the Barrier Islands of Northeast North Carolina back to the mainland is under way. Power outages have started in and around the Wrightsville Beach and Atlantic Beach (Morehead City and Willmington NC) I'm next - ![]() Thanks for the support Scott!!! |

Good luck, James, and above all stay safe! It's funy how this things just change their mind and had for the coast, I was hoping that this one may just sail further to the east and spare all of the eastern coast...Well, I was wrong.

Why can't women make up their minds?
Why can't women make up their minds?
I lost power yesterday but as you can see they have it back up and going again. Had the aquarium running on the generator last night so it was really cool to just sit there and watch it for hours and hours and hours I'm still getting pounded by surf and flooding in areas (no big deal - I flood at the sneeze when mother nature hick-ups here). This makes the 10th hurricane in the last 5 years that has made its way to me. (Isabelle in 2003 was our Katrina without the death toll). I think in my lifetime growing up and living here I have dealt with close to 30 hurricanes from the ash wednesday storm in the 60's to Isabelle in 2003So we pretty much have this down to a science but you have to respect each and everyone of them and treat them as if they are the Doomsday Hurricane (Katrina, Andrew, Ivan or Hugo). Prepare yourselves (including pets), know your evacuation routes and more importantly where to stay when you leave. This is really acting more like a Nor-Easter than a Hurricane. Wrightsville Beach, Atlantic Beach, Carolina Beach took the worst so far but she just wants to sit off the coast and pound us. The latest models so it slowly moving east - northeast and away from the coast. We dealt with this back in 2000 with Hurricane Fran came then when it hit the continental shelf then turned to head out to the Atlantic then a day later reversed its course and slamed us. Thank you all for your concern!!!! |

Thanks Scott, right now the models are conflicting. What the local weather is suggesting is that it will begin to re-feed off itself move slight north. This is where the models conflict some show it moving out towards the North Atlantic and some show it moving west and making land again right on top of me.
Only time will tell but right now its acting like a Nor-Easter and pounding the coast, major erosion is taking place and there is fear that highway 12 (the only way off of the Barrier Islands will be inpassable due to drifting Dunes re-establishing themselves over the road (only 4X4 can make it through if that happens). |
