THis years FLU???

Okay, I have been sick since 4:30am Sunday, and I mean to tell you this is THE WORST I have felt in ages! I mean to tell you, this bug has had me in the bathroom, or on my bed for almost 36 hours now! At one point I had a can in front while sitting on the can! (Gross I know, but I had to share my experience!)

Anyway, who else has had it, and how did you beat it? I would gladly give up a toe or 2 if it would help!!!!

Oh yeah, I have NO DESIRE to eat anything, for fear it will just make its way back out... Also my BACK is killing me, and I can't take deep breaths without major abdominal pain, tylenol every 4 hours and heat on my back are the only things that seem to help....

That doesn't sound like the flu to me. Especially the abdominal distress part. You should be having major aches and pains in your back and lungs area, not your abdominal area. The main area of pain as far as breathing is concerned would be the lower part of the rib cage but not the abdomen as such. GI distress doesn't sound like the flu to me. It sounds like an intestinal problem of some sort.

Do you have high fever? I always run a temperature above 102 when I get the flu.

P.S. -- Maybe one of the M.D.'s on the board will chime in with advice.

Right now the only one I see is BubbaWPB. With the West Palm Beach tag he might be a plastic surgeon but then again, who would go to a plastic surgeon named Bubba! Ok, just kidding.

Maybe Minh will respond, he's in IM.

Reinhold is an emergency medicine doc with his own air ambulance, so he could fly you to the hospital.

P.S. -- I have never gotten the flu in a year in which I got my flu shot but I have had two very bad bouts of the flu within the past six or seven years when I failed to get a flu shot.

P.P.S. -- We may not get any comments from any actual doctors because their malpractice carrier would go nuts if they posted something. I'll bet we could get Dr. Frist to give us a diagnosis if you could just post a brief video of yourself?

Fever seems to come and go with the tylenol. I get chills and then burn up sweating.

I don't know exactly what my temp is... I haven't taken it.

MIke,

Sorry to hear this, bud. Can you drug your butt to the emergency room or something? Abdominal pains usually not associated with the flu, at least in the years that I would get it I never felt any abdominal pains. We had here some type of stomac virus going around that made everyone sick with symptoms that you described but it was usually 24 hours thing. I wouldn't play around with this thing and just head for the doctors office.
Hope you feel better soon.

Flu symptoms:

Here are the symptoms according to WebMD:

Influenza

Symptoms

The symptoms of influenza (flu) appear suddenly and often include:
  • Fever of 100 °F(37.8 °C) to 104 °F(40 °C), which can reach 106 °F(41.1 °C) when symptoms first develop. Fever is usually continuous, but it may come and go. Fever may be lower in older adults than in children and younger adults.
  • Shaking chills.
  • Body aches and muscle pain (often severe), commonly in the back, arms, or legs.
  • Headache.
  • Pain when you move your eyes.
  • Fatigue, a general feeling of sickness (malaise), and loss of appetite.
  • A dry cough, runny nose, and a dry or sore throat. You may not notice these during the first few days of the illness when other symptoms are more severe. As your fever goes away, these symptoms may become more evident.
When fever is high, other symptoms usually are more severe.

I may have to do that Gene, my kids had a bug last week, I was thinking it was the same bug. Both Logan and Makayla were back to normal within about 24 hours too. That is why I am wondering why I still have the frequent trips to the bathroom...

Guess I gotta call the Doc!

Yes, hurry up and call your doctor because if they give you Tamiflu within the first 36 hours or so it will reduce the severity dramatically -- assuming it's the flu.

That sounds right George, except my lower abdominal pain. I just took my temp, it is 99.0. I haven't ever been one to get hot though, I am usually cold when sick...

Not a plastic surgeon... would you believe a shrink? And I live in WEST Palm Beach... not Palm Beach! BIG difference!

Anywho, flu is usually respiratory... this sounds more like GI. Without an exam or lab tests it's impossible to tell if it is viral, bacterial, or some other problem with the GI tract. Visit your doctor, s/he can run the tests to find out.

Definately GI, I have virtually no coughing. Charlie, I have Charmin ULTRA, and it is NOT helping! I don't know what is the worst part, the frequent trips to the bathroom, or the body aches... I feel like i have been hit by a truck!

Yeah, I can see how that makes a BIG difference!

Bubba the psychiatrist sounds a lot more professional that Bubba the plastic surgeon. No wonder you're in WEST Palm Beach. You need to change your name to something more upscale. Then you could have one of those "compounds" in Palm Beach with a brass plate on the stone wall at the front gate telling service people to use the rear entrance.

Just kidding!
