I think you can have up to four wives in the Sudan... but do you do head counts? If you count by feet, he's halfway to his maximum....although I think they use meters in the Sudan...

You're thinking of Saudi Arabia. Osama bin Laden has only four wives. He had to dump one in order to take on the last one because you're only supposed to have four at a time under Wahhabi interpretation of Sharia law. The Prophet Muhammad had more than four but I guess they decided to reduce it to four due to a shortage of brides?

However, in the Sudan, you're supposed to have as many wives as possible -- 20 or 30 wives would be appropriate. If you can only afford two or three wives, you will have no status whatsoever. Naturally with so many wives you will have many children; however, you do not count your children. That's taboo. Nobody keeps track of how many children they have in the Sudan.

I do not have many wives. In the Dinka tradition, I am supposed to have as many wives as I can. Somebody in a senior position like myself should have more than 30 wives. But this is not the case in our situation. Our fathers got married to many wives. For us now it is difficult to have them.

Currently, I have two wives. I should have had three but my second wife died and that is why I got another one. Otherwise, I should have taken 20 instead of two.

No, it's not a typo. He's saying that in his culture it is unnatural to count your children or your property (goats, cows, etc.). It seems to be perfectly acceptable to keep 20 to 30 wives. I believe they keep slaves, too, but that's a slightly different subject.
