Cut-n-Rummy was grinning from ear to ear last Friday when Philadelphia's Union Club awarded him a gold medal for his accomplishments as Secretary of Defense.

Well, why not?! President Bush awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to George Tenet on the same day that a Congressional Committee released a report detailing his stunning failures at the CIA.

No word yet on whether Cut-n-Rummy will receive any medals from Our Leader after that parting shot memo that was obviously leaked on Rummy's orders. We now know that on the same day that Bush was preaching that Democrats who criticized his Iraq policies were aiding al-Qaida, he was already in the possession of Rumsfailed's memo admitting that our policies in Iraq were not working and that it was time to make major changes, including the immediate withdrawal of some forces.

Bush responded to a reporter who questioned him about this by saying that he receives advice memos all the time. He didn't say if he ever reads any of them.

And now that John Bolton has resigned as our unconfirmed Ambassador to the U.N., Bush blames "obstructionist Democrats." The "obstructionist" Democrats managed to block Bolton's initial confirmation but it was a Republican, Sen. Lincoln Chafee, who blocked Bolton's second confirmation hearing. Bush thought he could sneak the confirmation through the Republican-controlled lame duck session but Chafee announced that it wouldn't get out of committee because he intended to vote against it.

So now Bush has to come up with a new nominee as our ambassador to the United Nations. I propose Sen. George "Macaca" Allen, a new kind of neo-con -- a neo-Confederate!

I think you may be right. What's unusual about this memo is that when he wrote it, he was not aware that he was about to be fired. The "leak" of the memo to the press was almost certainly a parting shot.

As Pat Buchanan said, "When they came for him he had one bullet left in the chamber and he fired it."
