Re: They're off and running for the 2008 GOP nomination:

WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEE...

Bush Job Approval Drops To 21%

John McCain: The fact is that I have agreed with President Bush far more than I have disagreed. And on the transcendant issues, the most important issues of our day, I have been totally in agreement and support of President Bush. So, have we had some disagreements on some issues, particularly domestic issues, yes, but I will argue my conservative record of voting with anyone's and I will also submit that my support for President Bush has been active and very impassioned on issues that are important to the American people.

And I am particularly talking about the war on terror, the war in Iraq, national security, national defense, support of our men and women in the military, uh, fiscal discipline, and a number of other issues; so I strongly disagree with any assertion that I've been more at odds with the President of the United States than I have been in agreement.

P.S. -- McCain voted with the president 91% of the time since January 2001, including 95% of the time in 2007 and 100% of the time in 2008.

Re: They're off and running for the 2008 GOP nomination:

John McCain Stood Us Up Today

John McCain was a no-show today. He was supposed to come to New Orleans today to helicopter from here to an offshore oil rig to promote environmentally safe and sound offshore oil drilling. It would have made for a great teevee segment. Check out this view of the Mississippi river at New Orleans.

That's what the Mississippi looks like after 419,000 gallons of heavy fuel oil was spilled into it yesterday. A ship T-boned a barge, splitting it in half. So now we have nearly half a million gallons of heavy fuel oil "thick, tar-like No. 6 fuel oil" in the Mississippi river, which is the source of our drinking water. The river is now closed all the way to the Gulf of Mexico, some 100 miles.

It would have made a great backdrop to McCain's arrival in New Orleans to promote offshore oil drilling.

Desperate John McCain Will Do Anything To Win

McCain, who sold his soul when he kissed Jerry Falwell's big fat ass on stage, is now running ads in South Florida tying Barack Obama to Fidel Castro, believe it or not.

Here

P.S. -- McCain will lose in a landslide. He will carry the redneck vote and that's it.

Re: They're off and running for the 2008 GOP nomination:

Remember Troy King, Alabama's Attorney General & John McCain's Alabama Campaign Manager?

Well, it looks like the Birmingham News has figured out a way to bring up the name of King's boyfriend, J.W. Godwin. They did it as part of an article on pay raises.
Not receiving raises has not been a problem for another King employee — 24-year-old John W. Godwin. Godwin started working in the attorneys general office as an unpaid intern last summer, when he was a senior at Troy University. Shortly after arriving in Kings office, Godwin was put on the payroll at $10 an hour. Over the next nine months, Godwin rapidly ascended the ladder. In July 2007, King appointed him as a special administrative assistant earning $39,456 a year. He completed his degree in broadcast journalism in December, and on March 27 was named to his current title of executive assistant, a job paying $57,504 annually, according to state records. "J.W. is an exceptional young man who is the chief aide to the attorney general and who is almost indispensable in terms of the many functions he carries out in this office," Bence said. Bence said Godwin's duties include policy research and constituent relations, and he serves as a liaison between the attorney general and the staff. Godwin travels with King as part of his duties, such as accompanying him to this years National Association of Attorneys General Conference.
In case you're wondering, yes, gentle reader, young J.W. Godwin was indeed Troy University's homecoming king in November 2006. It's amazing what you can find with "the Google" as John McCain calls it. He graduated in December 2007 with a degree in journalism. Note that the reporter was careful to point out that his duties require that he travel overnight with Attorney General King and that his personal services are almost indispensable. By all accounts he seems to be an up and coming young man whose many fine qualities are recognized and rewarded by the attorney general.

Attorney General King is quick to recognize and reward talent. J.W. went from unpaid summer intern to $10 an hour paid intern to $39,500/yr assistant to $57,504/year personal assistant and traveling companion all within a period of less than nine months. That's not quite as good as one of King's other top aides, Chris Bence, who managed to get appointed to a job as a $104,000 a year paralegal in spite of the fact that he has no legal experience at all. He's actually King's spokesman and chief of staff but since paralegals get paid more, King designated him a paralegal. He has no legal training whatsoever. None. At age 61, he's a bit too old for the rigors of "personal assistant and traveling companion." Those responsibilities are better left to younger men.

J.W. Godwin and Lauren Edwards are 2006 Homecoming King and Queen at Troy University.

P.S. -- As a refresher, in case you haven't been keeping up, the rumor is that Troy King's wife, Paige, came home unexpectedly and discovered her husband in flagrante delicto with a young male assistant who happens to be a recent Troy University homecoming king (Troy King making out with Troy's King, what are the odds of that?). She was furious and kicked him out of their house. She is supposedly demanding a divorce. No one is talking. Immediately after the rumor hit the blogosphere, the McCain Campaign removed three different pages that referenced Attorney General Troy King as Alabama State Chairman of McCain's Campaign for President. It's hilarious because you can still find them in Google cache.

P.P.S. -- I just checked and the Google cache has now been scrubbed of all three pages that mention any connection between the McCain Campaign and Alabama Attorney General Troy King. It's as if they never existed. Except for the fact that I copied them and posted them in this post. That's the official press release -- in full -- from the McCain Campaign appointing his Alabama Leadership Team naming Troy King as his state campaign chairman. I included links to three pages in Google cache that were good at the time but all three links are now dead. Apparently Google has deleted those pages completely. I wonder if they can still be found using Way Back?

P.P.P.S. -- Troy King continued
The rampant rumors that have flooded the Internet about Attorney General Troy King continue to slowly make their way into the mainstream media. On July 18, Paul Finebaum called King’s office while broadcasting on his statewide radio program to try to get to the bottom of the claims being made that King was caught in a compromising position with a male staffer. King refused to talk with Finebaum and refused comment. Now it seems WVTM from Anniston caught up with King at an event and asked him about the rumors. King refused comment.

What's happening here is that they are trying to get him to address the specific rumors so that they will have a story to report but he is refusing to deny the rumors. He will usually say something like "I'm not here to talk about that tonight" or "I'm not going to comment on that."

Don't they make a cute couple?

John McCain's Alabama State Campaign Chairman Attorney General Troy King with his personal assistant, staff liaison and traveling companion J.W. Godwin, Troy University's 2006 Homecoming King. According to the attorney general's office, Mr. Godwin is an exceptional young man who is "almost indispensable" in terms of the many different functions he carries out.

P.S. -- Troy King appeared on WVNN's Dale Jackson show in Alabama yesterday, July 31, and he was asked directly if the rumors circulating on the blogs that he was caught in bed with a male aide were true. He replied that he does not "discuss rumors."
Dale Jackson: There have been rumors all over the blogosphere. There have been rumors everywhere. I get them every single day. I don't see it going away, I see it getting worse and worse and the rumor says that you were caught with a male aide by your wife, she threw you out of the house because you were gay and there was some sort of problem going on there. Is there any part of that rumor, any part of it that is true in any way, shape or form?

Troy King: Hey, Dale. Hey, Dale, To this point the answer's been the same as it is today, I don't discuss rumors.

Dale Jackson: So your answer is a 'no comment,' basically?

Troy King: I don't discuss rumors.

Dale Jackson: Do you think there's going to come a time when this is going to become an issue you're gonna have to address?

Troy King: I'm not gonna... you're persistent, but I don't discuss rumors, I haven't and I'm not going to.

Dale Jackson: Do you think that this is a legitimate story in the state of Alabama if it was another individual, would you not think that it would warrant an answer from the person in question because honestly attorney general, uh, honestly a "no, it's not true," "no, parts of it aren't true," etc. would do a lot to kill the story but a "no comment" in my opinion says "what's up?!"

Troy King: I can't speak for what somebody else might do, all I can tell you Dale is I have lots of things to do and one of them is to not discuss rumors. I'm just not, I'm not gonna begin discussing rumors. Sorry, but I'm not gonna do it.

Dale Jackson: So there's a 'no comment' on that. Attorney General Troy KIng, thank you very much for taking the time to talk to us today. I hope to have you on the program here in the near future when this story changes, we'll get in touch with you.

Troy King: Thank you, Dale.

Dale Jackson: There you go. Attorney General Troy King on the Dale Jackson Show.
Hey, Troy, it's legal in California now, but I don't know if the voters in Alabama are ready to elect the first gay-married governor. Montgomery is not San Franciso.

WSJ Slams The Forked Tongue Express Again

Rupert Murdoch's Wall Street Journal has called out John McCain on another one of his blatant lies. McCain keeps telling audiences that Obama will raise Social Security taxes and he will never raise Social Security taxes.

White man speaks with forked tongue:
RACINE, Wis. -- Sen. John McCain continues to slam rival Barack Obama for wanting to raise taxes on Social Security, even as he periodically explains that he might be willing to do the same.

At times the Republican presidential candidate leaves audiences thinking he won't raise taxes no matter what. At other times, he says all options are on the table and parties will have to work together to find a solution.

"I will not raise your taxes nor support a tax increase. I will not do it," Sen. McCain said Wednesday at a town hall meeting outside of Denver. He said Sen. Obama "wants to raise your taxes to pay for bigger government."

But that evening, at a fund-raiser in Kansas City, Mo., Sen. McCain said the matter has to be worked out with both parties. "In any negotiation that I might have, when I go in, my position will be that I am opposed to raising taxes," he said. "But we have to work together to save Social Security." That echoed comments to ABC News's "This Week" on Sunday when he said that "everything's on the table," including raising taxes.

Re: They're off and running for the 2008 GOP nomination:

McCain's 'Painful' ad against Obama uses 'widely debunked' material

TITLE: "Painful."

LENGTH: 30 seconds.

AIRING: In 11 key states where McCain ads already are on the air.

SCRIPT: Announcer: "Life in the spotlight must be grand, but for the rest of us times are tough. Obama voted to raise taxes on people making just $42,000. He promises more taxes on small business, seniors, your life savings, your family. Painful taxes, hard choices for your budget. Not ready to lead. That's the real Obama."

John McCain: "I'm John McCain and I approved this message."

KEY IMAGES: The spot opens with a montage of cheering crowds, flashing cameras, Obama waving to supporters, Obama's picture on covers of magazines like GQ, US Weekly and Vanity Fair. It is followed by images of a woman and two children with the words, "Obama: Raise taxes on middle class"; of two women in a floral shop, "On small business"; of an elderly woman, "On seniors"; and of a woman and child, "Your family." A smiling Obama appears with the words "Painful taxes, hard choices for your budget, not ready to lead." The final image is one of McCain.

ANALYSIS: The McCain campaign's oft-repeated assessment of Obama's tax proposals is based, in several instances, on outdated material that has been widely debunked. Obama has said his plan would raise taxes on single people making more than $200,000 and couples making more than $250,000, which by all measures doesn't add up to middle class.

The ad's most specific assertion - Obama voted to raise taxes on people making $42,000 - is based on a nonbinding Senate budget resolution early this year that the Bush tax cuts of 2001 and 2003 be allowed to expire in 2011 as scheduled. Obama has criticized the Bush tax cuts and called for ending them for the wealthiest taxpayers.

McCain didn't support Bush's tax cuts when they were passed but has said he supports them now. He contends that to allow the cuts to expire would be tantamount to a tax increase.

The broader charge that Obama promised more taxes on small businesses, the elderly, "life savings" and families - what the McCain campaign called "painful taxes" resulting in "hard choices for your budget" - is based on an overly broad reading of the Obama budget plan.

"Even though a host of independent, nonpartisan organizations have said this attack isn't true, Sen. McCain continues to lie about Sen. Obama's plan." Obama campaign spokesman Hari Sevugan.

The ad continues the McCain campaign argument that Obama is a celebrity. By showing no men, the ad makes its appeal directly to women, a group polls show leans toward Obama. By saying Obama is not like "the rest of us," the spot also adds to what Obama contends is part of the GOP effort to make voters fearful of him personally.

In support of its ad, the McCain campaign cites the nonpartisan Web site Factcheck.org, which has been critical at times of McCain's spots, contending they contain false or misleading information. For example, the site says McCain's charge that Obama would raise taxes on small businesses is false, contending that the vast majority of small-business owners would see no change and that many others would see their taxes fall.

When a reporter on Aug. 1 asked McCain about Factcheck's criticism, McCain said he didn't respond to Web sites but added that "I have no idea what they're talking about."

P.S. -- John McCain is so desperate that he will allow his handlers to say anything in his campaign ads if he thinks it will help him finally win the White House. Notice how he personally backtracked a little bit on the tire gauge thing and admitted that if everybody properly inflated their tires, we actually would save about 3% on our gasoline consumption? But his campaign continues to send out little tire gauges claiming that they represent the entirety of Barack Obama energy policy.

And, when asked about Paris Hilton's reply YouTube ad, he said he thought it was pretty funny. I wonder if he noticed that she kicked his "wrinkly, white-haired dude" ass from here to kingdom come in that spot. It was great!

Re: They're off and running for the 2008 GOP nomination:

Paris Hilton Responds to McCain Ad

An Ad for the Paris Hilton Presidential Campaign. Paid for by Funny Or Die.

I can't believe John McCain found these lines funny:
He's the oldest celebrity in the world, like super old. Old enough to remember when dancing was a sin and beer was served in a bucket, but, is he ready to lead?
Picture of John McCain with question: Is he ready to lead?
Hey, America, I'm Paris Hilton and I'm a celebrity, too. Only I'm not from the olden days and promising things like that other guy. I'm just hot.

But then that wrinkly white-haired guy used me in his campaign ad which I guess means I'm running for president. So thanks for the endorsement white-haired dude and I want America to know that I'm like totally ready to lead.

And now I want to present my energy policy for America, just as soon as I finish reading this article on where I can fly to to get the best tan. (She's holding an issue of Travel magazine.) Oh, Maui, Love Jet.

Okay, so here's my energy policy. Barack wants to focus on new technology to cut foreign oil dependency and McCain wants off-shore drilling. Well, why don't we do a hybrid of both candidates' ideas. We could do limited off-shore drilling, with strict environmental oversight, while creating tax incentives to get Detroit making hybrid and electric cars.

That way the off-shore drilling carries us until the new technologies kick in which would then create new jobs and energy independence. Energy crisis solved. I'll see you at the debate b!tches.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go pick out a vice president. I'm thinking Brianna.

I'll see you at the White House. Oh, and I might paint it pink, I hope that's cool with you guys. Bye.

I'm Paris Hilton and I approved this message because I think it's totally hot.

Re: They're off and running for the 2008 GOP nomination:

Oh. My. God.

Look what I just found on the editorial page of The Wall Street Journal! They like Obama's economic policy better than McCain's, at least his monetary policy.

REVIEW & OUTLOOK
Barack and the Buck
August 8, 2008; Page A14

The underreported economic news of the week is that Barack Obama favors a stronger dollar. Even better, he thinks a stronger greenback would help to reduce oil prices.

That at least is what the Democratic Presidential candidate told a town hall forum in Parma, Ohio, on Tuesday. "If we had a strengthening of the dollar, that would help" reduce fuel costs, he said, according to a Reuters dispatch ignored by most of the media.

This ought to be a bigger story. In linking the dollar to oil prices, Mr. Obama is pointedly at odds with the Bush Administration and Federal Reserve, both of which blame high commodity prices on supply and demand, despite falling demand due to slower global growth. Fed officials -- in particular, Vice Chairman Donald Kohn -- have expressly rejected any strong link between the dollar's collapse and the oil price surge since last August.

This conveniently absolves the Fed and Bush Treasury of responsibility for the consequences of what has been their destructive and all but explicit dollar devaluation strategy. If the Illinois Senator rejects greenback debasement, that's the best news to date about Obamanomics.

Reuters also quoted Mr. Obama as saying "The way to strengthen the dollar is for us to get our economy back in shape." On that point, he has it backward: Strengthening the dollar would help the economy -- by making the U.S. a destination for capital, and especially by reducing the inflation in food and energy prices that has pounded the American middle class. Those price hikes may yet tilt the economy into a recession it could otherwise avoid.

We don't know who is whispering in Mr. Obama's ear about the dollar, but he's on to a rich political vein. Americans know instinctively that something is wrong when the Canadian loonie is worth more than the greenback. Over to you, John McCain.

P.S. -- I love it! I absolutely love it! The Wall Street Journal rightly trashing the Bush Administration and praising Obama and then taunting wrinkly white-haired dude John McCain at the end.

And let us not forget that The Wall Street Journal is owned by Rupert Murdoch, who also owns Fox News.

Arrow Speaking of Republicans running for something, here's one running his mouth:

Aug. 11, 2008 Is The Two-Year Anniversary Of "The Macaca Moment"

Thank you George Allen for being an ignorant, redneck, racist jerk! The Democrats owe control of the Senate to you. In just one minute of jawdropping ignorance you turned over control of the United States Sentate. No one gave the Democrats much of a shot at picking up all six seats they needed but you certainly did your part. And how!

Let's relive "The Macaca Moment"

Thanks again, jerk!

Hilarious Typo

This AP article on potential Veep selections by both Obama and McCain has been up for two days now and no one has corrected what I can only assume is a typo. Maybe it was an intentional typo?

Speaking of McCain's possible vice presidential choices, pay particular attention to the last phrase and how Little Joe Lieberman is described:
His top contenders are said to include Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. Less traditional choices mentioned include former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, an abortion-rights supporter, and Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, the Democratic vice presidential prick in 2000 who now is an independent.

The Wingnuts Know It's About To Come To An End

John McCain supporter freaks out over Michelle Obama's speech. His wife/cousin and mother/sister were unable to talk him into putting down the gun and leaving the trailer peacefully. He was last heard shouting something about "this is Florida and I'll shoot your ass if you come any closer."

A psychological evaluation is scheduled for tomorrow.

P.S. -- Earlier reports that the man's name was William Kristol proved to be unfounded.

These links never seem to work for more than a few weeks, so here's the full report from TampaBay.com:
August 26, 2008

Pasco man shootin' mad after Obama speech, authorities say

The man stood outside his RV, yelling and shooting a gun into the air. When Pasco sheriff's deputies confronted him, he ran inside and wouldn't come out.

That started a six-hour standoff late Monday night between the man, whose name was not released, and authorities, Sheriff's Office spokesman Kevin Doll said.

SWAT team units arrived later and surrounded the RV, Doll said. As the situation entered the early hours of this morning, SWAT team members fired riot gas into the man's home. He still wouldn't come out, Doll said.

Finally, about 5 a.m., he exited his RV and was taken into custody. The cause of his displeasure, according to Doll, was Michelle Obama's speech last night at the Democratic National Convention.

Doll said the man will undergo a psychological evaluation.

Re: They're off and running for the 2008 GOP nomination:

She Was For It Before She Was Against It

In McCain Campaign ads and in her stock stump speech, Gov. Sarah Palin touts her opposition to the "Bridge to Nowhere." That's an outright lie. She supported the "Bridge to Nowhere" while running for governor. In fact, she praised Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK) for all the pork barrel earmarks he was able to get for Alaska.

After the "Bridge to Nowhere" came to national attention, Stevens threatened to resign from the Senate if the bridge project was stripped from the Transportation Bill. It really wasn't. In a compromise move that didn't accomplish anything at all, the Senate agreed to leave the $223 million for the bridge in the bill but told Alaska they could do whatever they wanted with the money. In other words, here's the money but it's not for the bridge, it's for whatever you want to spend it on and if you want to spend it on the bridge, that's fine but please don't tell us about it.

Palin praised the bridge project before it became an object of national ridicule and didn't change her mind about it until after the cost estimates soared to more than $400 million. After she received the money, she announced that the reason she decided not to build the bridge was because it would cost more than $400 million and Alaska couldn't afford it.
At issue for Palin is the bridge that would have connected the town of Ketchikan with the remote island of Gravina, which sits across a channel and has fewer than 100 residents. Gravina Island, however, is home to the Ketchikan airport. Rather than the current ferry service, the bridge would have made the airport easily accessible by car. Critics of the $223 million federal earmark for the bridge, including McCain, decried the project as a waste of taxpayer dollars. Eventually, Stevens lost a battle in the fall of 2005 and the earmark was stripped but the money was sent to the state anyway, where the government was free to decide what projects to spend the money on.

After defeating incumbent Gov. Frank Murkowski in the 2006 Republican primary, Palin appeared before the Ketchikan Chamber of Commerce in September 2006 and indicated support for the bridge project. "This link is a commitment to help Ketchikan expand its access, to help this community prosper," she told the local chamber of commerce, according to an account in the Ketchikan Daily News.

By the time Palin became governor, cost estimates for the bridge soared to nearly $400 million. She had three options: pay for the bridge project with state funds, get more federal funding or kill the project. In her statement nixing the project, Palin cited the cost overruns.
Virtually everything Sarah Palin says in her stock stump speech is an outright lie.
The McCain camp has made her signature issue shutting down the Bridge to Nowhere. But as The New Republic put it today that's just "a naked lie." And pretty much the same thing has been written today in Newsweek, the Washington Post, the AP, the Wall Street Journal. Yesterday even Fox's Chris Wallace called out Rick Davis on it.

On earmarks she's an even bigger crock. On the trail with McCain they're telling everyone that she's some kind of earmark slayer when actually, when she was mayor and governor, in both offices, she requested and got more earmarks than virtually any city or state in the country. TPM
P.S. -- Congress killed the earmark for the Bridge to Nowhere in 2005 but Palin continued to push for approval of the project while campaigning for governor in 2006. After she took office as governor, she tried to get Congress to approve $329 million more for the project but her efforts failed. It was only in November 2007 that Palin finally gave up on building the bridge to nowhere because Alaska couln't afford to make up the difference in the cost. She decided to keep the $223 million in partial funding.

The most ludicrous claim made by the McCain Campaign is that Sarah Palin's experience is somehow comparable or even superior to Barack Obama's. That's absurd.

When Obama was three years into his first term as a state senator, from a district with approximately 800,000 people, Palin was mayor of Wasilla (pop. ~6,750). When he was a community organizer, Palin was busy competing in beauty pageants (First place in the Miss Wasilla Pageant and second in the Miss Alaska Pageant). She was also bouncing between six colleges in five years in pursuit of her BS in communications.

Even her drug experience wasn't comparable to Obama's. It was just a step above what Bill Clinton admitted to. Clinton said he tried marijuana but he "didn't inhale." Palin admits to smoking marijuana as a youth but says she "didn't enjoy it."

Remember how we all worried about George H. W. Bush's health when he was in office because Dan Quayle was his vice president? And then we couldn't make any moves to impeach George W. Bush because Dick Cheney was his vice president. Well, Sarah Palin is John McCain's Dan Quayle. She was picked to appeal to the dumb white vote and the disgruntled Hillary supporters, which may or may not be the same. Dan Quayle was picked strictly because it was believed he had sex appeal and would appeal to female voters. I kid you not. That was the primary reason he was picked. It certainly wasn't because he was a whiz at spelling.

McCain Making A Fool Of Himself. Again!

Poor John McCain. He actually believes all the BS in Sarah Palin's stump speech. He's now claiming that she sold the Alaska governor's jet on eBay and made a profit on the sale. He's wrong on both points. He's not actually lying because he believes all that crap. No one in his campaign has bothered to fact-check all the lies she's putting out. Either that or they think they can get away with them because they believe all Americans are as dumb as the people who attended the GOP convention.

She tried to sell the plane on eBay but there were no takers. She ended up selling it through a broker. The state paid $2.7 million for the jet and it was sold for $2.1 million. That's a loss, not a profit. But then again, John McCain says he knows nothing about economics so I guess we should give him a pass on this one.

P.S. -- When challenged on the truthfulness of McCain's claims about the plane selling for a profit on eBay, his campaign said he "misspoke."

Just Wondering About Something

Why is it that when Britney Spears' 16-year-old younger sister got pregnant out of wedlock all the "conservative" pundits, especially the talking heads on Fox News, declared self-righteously that it was due to a "failure in parenting" yet they are all as quiet as a mouse about Sarah Palin's 17-year-old daughter who is in a similar situation?

P.S. -- Maybe her purity ring was defective?

How Romantic

Bristol Palin's baby daddy fiancé, Levi Johnston, has "Bristol" tattooed on the ring finger of his left hand. Isn't that sweet!

Instead of a tattoo, Bristol appears to be wearing an engagement ring.
