The mayor of Baghdad thinks we have our priorities wrong. He wants to know why we insist on wasting money on "planting trees" in his city when we can't even keep the lights on for more than a couple of hours a day.
On average, residents get only two hours of electricity a day, and are bitterly angry that the world's most powerful nation has not delivered a single major power plant in four years of occupation. And hours after yesterday's presentation a high-ranking US official admitted that, despite spending $22 billion on reconstruction across Iraq, the Americans didn't expect Baghdad to have a 24-hour electricity supply until 2013. Here. P.S. -- Silly mayor! You don't need lights to see the trees in the daytime and only the insurgents would dare venture out at night.

Geezus!
The epitome of "can't see the forest for the trees". I blame the Iraqi media. They exclusively focus on tree news and not the other good deeds we do day to day. Like...building...stuff...and what not. Oh! and providing security for defense contractors. Stupid media.

Re: What's wrong with a little urban beautification program?
Laura Bush blames the U.S. media, especially those pesky TV news programs that keep showing us the "one bombing a day that discourages everybody."
On February 26, 2007, Laura Bush told Larry King that things are improving in Iraq but she understand that the "war is wearing" on people. The First Lady went on to say: "Many parts of Iraq are stable now. But, of course, what we see on television is the one bombing a day that discourages everybody." Yes, I can see how one bombing a day might be discouraging especially if you don't know where it will take place or when. Just think about that for a minute. What if every day when you left home for work or you went to the supermarket for groceries, you knew that a bomb was going to go off that would kill dozens of people but you had no idea when or where, just that a bomb will go off somewhere in your city every day. A couple of points that Mrs. Bush seems to be in the dark about. 1) It's not one bomb a day in Iraq. It's multiple bombs a day! 2) The violence in Iraq is not less now than it was six months ago or a year ago or two years ago. It's much worse now. So it doesn't matter if some areas are relatively stable if all of the violence has moved to the other areas. The areas that are relatively stable are the areas where the Shia are in the majority and have control. The Sunnis either don't live there or they were driven out. Those areas are relatively stable. The same goes for the Kurdish areas in the North of Iraq. Areas like Baghdad that are mixed, are extremely violent. And if things quiet down for awhile, it just means people like Moqtada al-Sadr have made a decision to lay low for a few weeks or months. It doesn't mean they have been defeated. Unfortunately for us, the Sunnis are taking up the slack right now to make sure that the Iraqi Civil War continues on pace whether the Shiites like it or not. Does Laura Bush really believe the stuff she says? Is she that much out of touch with reality? Like when she said that she doesn't believe any of the polls that say that the majority of Americans think her husband is not doing a good job because all the people she talks to love her husband. Is it possible anyone can be that out of touch with reality? Laura doesn't have any relatives serving in the armed forces in Iraq. Her daughters are not in the military and none of her neices and nephews are in the military. Maybe that's why her mother-in-law says they shouldn't worry their "beautiful minds" about casualties in Iraq? __________________________________________________ ____________ "Why should we hear about body bags and deaths? It's not relevant. So why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?" -- Mrs. George Herbert Walker Bush, speaking of possible American casualties in Iraq! On ABC's Good Morning America, March 18, 2003.
