Taliban leader caught in a burqa


A senior Taliban commander has been captured by Afghan troops in the southern province of Kandahar as he tried to escape a Nato manhunt disguised as a woman in a burqa.

The man was identified by Nato on Wednesday as Mullah Mahmood and described as an "extremist commander and suicide attack facilitator" for the province.

Soldiers at a checkpoint in the area "spotted the oddity" on Tuesday when the man identified as Mahmood tried to pass them hidden under the garment...

Maybe they can use this tactic to finally catch Osama. Be on the lookout for a six-foot woman in a burqa. There can't be very many.

The FBI describes Osama as "tall and thin, being 6' 4.5" (194 cm) tall and weighing about 165 pounds (75 kg). He has an olive complexion, is left-handed, and usually walks with a cane."

Might be pretty hard for him to get away with wearing a burqa.

He released an audio tape in January 2006 that we have authenticated. And a December 11, 2005 letter from Atiyah Abd al-Rahman to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi indicates that bin Laden and the al-Qaida leadership were based in the Waziristan region of Pakistan at that time. The letter was translated by our counterterrorism center at West Point. The letter has been deemed authentic by military and counterterrorism officials, according to the Washington Post.

A French newspaper reported in August 2006 that he had just died of typhoid fever. That report has been discounted by everyone involved: The President of France, our own Secretary of State and the Saudi government. It was based on a report to Saudi intelligence but it has NOT been confirmed by anybody. According to the Saudi government's official explanation, they believe bin Laden is (or was) suffering from a "water borne illness," possibly typhoid fever, but they have no confirmation of his death.

It has been rumored for the past couple of years that both he and his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri, are hiding out in Waziristan. It has also been reported that they have assurances from the highest levels of the Pakistani military and intelligence branch that they will NOT be arrested as long as they cause no trouble inside Pakistan.

P.S. -- He was actually the brother of the head guy. They have the story a bit wrong. The head guy is still inside the Red Mosque and he said he would rather die than surrender.
