Re: Amazing Aerial Pictures of Greenberg KS

Scott,

Yes, it was completely wiped out. Reminds me of Homestead, Florida after Hurricane Andrew. Or the Mississippi Gulf Coast area following Hurricane Camille and then again following Hurricane Katrina -- entire blocks of homes completely gone, just concrete slabs left.

I hope the people there have decent homeowners insurance. Most of the people down here who were devasted by Hurricane Katrina are getting screwed by their insurance companies. And, to add insult to injury, insurance rates have doubled and tripled over the past year! Many insurance companies are refusing to offer wind coverage at any price. They don't offer flood coverage (that's a federal program) and now they're trying to write homeowner's insurance policies without wind damage coverage. In Mississippi, many people are forced to get federal flood insurance and then wind damage insurance through the state pool in addition to their regular homeowner's or business owner's insurance. Many small businesses are leaving the area because of the insurance situation.

Homeowner's insurance is now extremely high if you live very near the coast in either Louisiana or Mississippi but it's worse in Mississippi. You can no longer purchase homeowner's insurance at any price from any company if you try to rebuild in the lower areas of Louisiana that were wiped out by Katrina. If you want to rebuild your home, you do it without a mortgage and without any insurance. That's because those areas are not protected by the current levee system, such as it is. In truth, some of those towns probably should not be rebuilt.

WOW! That is crazy! I know this sounds bad, but it is amazing that only 10 people were killed. With that much devastation, it seems the number could have easily been much higher.
