If you think Papa Ratzi pissed off the Muslims, wait till you hear what he said in Brazil!
In a speech to Latin American and Caribbean bishops at the end of a visit to Brazil, the Pope said the Church had not imposed itself on the indigenous peoples of the Americas. They had welcomed the arrival of European priests at the time of the conquest as they were "silently longing" for Christianity, he said. Millions of tribal Indians are believed to have died as a result of European colonization backed by the Church since Columbus landed in the Americas in 1492, through slaughter, disease or enslavement. Read the rest here. P.S. -- What century is he living in? It sounds like he was born 500 years too late.

Ninong,
That is an amazing statement from a man who is in fact extremely well educated. He must have been drinking the Jesuit Kool-Aid… Regards, Scott

Hmmm, I almost forgot there was a Pope...
I guess that speech would have been welcomed in the dark ages. I wonder if he's seen his Doctor about that "foot in mouth" disease...

Scott,
I don't think Benedict XVI believes that the Roman Catholic Church is guilty of forced conversions, thus the need to pretend that the conversos were "silently longing" for Christianity. This is like saying that the rape victim is to blame for the rape. This is a rather unfortunate topic for him to bring up considering his previous reference to forced conversion in the spread of Islam.
