Burning Saltwater

I haven't seen it anywhere else but on May 17 2007 the Erie Times News (newspaper) and all the local Erie, Pa. TV news channels did a story on a local man who has done it.
John Kanzius, a retired radio and television broadcaster and engineer, made a test tube of saltwater burst into flame for several minutes at 3000 degrees fahrenheit using 200w worth of directed radio waves.
John Kanzius was showcased in Readers Digest not long ago for his using radio waves in some cancer cures and treatments.
This was something to see. Fire shot out of that test tube like a blowtorch with a bright white flame. The moment I read the morning paper I figured this was a planet changing event but it seems to have faded away within 24 hrs. Where is Al Gore when you need him or everybody else?
A quote from the story from the company that built the wave generator.
"Here we are paying $3 a gallon for gas, and this is a device that seems to turn salt water into an alternative fuel."

Re: Burning Saltwater

Well, without having a detailed scientific analysis in front of me it's hard to say.

The first thing that strikes me is the efficiency of the system. How much energy is being poured into the radio transmitter in order to break apart the hydrogen bond? Basic physics says the amount of energy going in is less than amount going out, and since water is already the "ground state" of the supposed fuel, that really only leaves one "import to the system" for energy, which is the begining radio wave.

Something else that might be contributing to the lack of public interest is the fact that Radio waves can be dangerous to sensitive electronic devices, like our computers. Further, radio frequencies are owned. As stated, the media resources available to me don't exactly detail out the process or materials used, but i'd be willing to bet that's a really large transmitter. I don't think local radio stations would part with their rights to their frequencies without seeing a healthy profit.

Anyway.... These are just my initial thoughts. I do think alternative energy solutions aren't explored enough or in the required depth, but i think it's important to be selective about which alternatives we choose to explore.

Re: Burning Saltwater

I agree with a lot of your post and you made some great points. It was stated that they used less than 200w of electricity. "less than what it takes to light up 2 75w light bulbs".
What I'm considering is this is Erie, Pa. and a guy that is basically working on his own. Not some huge funded research center. He is not going to have unlimited power, money, or some three story machine he is working with.
Radio waves are dangerous but so is every type of energy that we use.
I would think someone would look at a world globe and say "Wow, shur is a lot of saltwater sittin' there" and come and take a look at what this guy is doing.
The real fear I think is everyone might wake up one morning and find that oil is worthless.

Re: Burning Saltwater

Once again, i think it's a nifty idea, but the energy input into the system and the energy output of the system are 2 seperate issues.

At best, the system is going to have 80% efficiency. Meaning, if you put 200w into it, you're only going to be able to get 160w worth of work out of the system. Which is one of the problems with electric cars since our batteries aren't very efficient. 160w wouldn't be enough to move the car and the battery.

In regards to oil:

The American Petroleum Industry is one of my pet peaves. We've had better energy resources available to us since prohibition lifted, and the partnership between the oil and automotive industry constitutes a Cartel.

IMO oil is already worthless. I'm just at a bit of a loss to explain that to those around me.

ANy way, if any of y'all have money and are trying to find ways to help the world out of the impending ecological cataclism, buy a Tesla.
