If I remember correctly the translation means "lime water"

I just answered that question a couple of days ago on this very board: Kalkwasser=chalk-water. That's the literal translation. In English, it should be called limewater.
It is a saturated solution of either calcium hydroxide or calcium oxide. Most people prefer calcium hydroxide. Ninong ![]()

Actually Ninong, to get technical, you can't have a saturated solution of calcium oxide - as soon as calcium oxide makes contact with water it becomes calcium hydroxide (with a nice thermal reaction to boot-worth mentioning because of this potentially more dangerous reaction). Sorry, just splitting hairs.

Which is why most people prefer to use calcium hydroxide to prepare Kalkwasser.
