...dearest Shakespeare when we need thee.
![]() BISMARCK, N.D., June 26 — North Dakotans can’t move their state to warmer climes, but some hope a proposed name change will at least help the state seem a little less northern. The Greater North Dakota Association, the state’s chamber of commerce, is backing a proposal to cut the state’s name to “Dakota.” Supporters insist the plan would help alter the state’s image as a frigid, treeless prairie. Some state officials worry the plan would subject North Dakota to national ridicule — which is what happened in 1989, the last time a name change was proposed. N I N N G P.S. - How about "South Manitoba," that sounds a LOT warmer. Maybe "West Minnesota?" "East Montana?" Am I getting warmer? ![]() P.P.S. - Does this post qualify as "ridicule?" ![]()

Uffda!!! Those of us who live in or near the great state of North Dakota are a little sensitive about you fancy-shmancy southerners making fun of one of the last undiscovered great places in the USA, then!
Ya sure, those folks talk kinda funny, you betcha, but they live through -100 degree winters and +100 degree summers. They rank 49th or 50th in every category you can think of, but do you hear them complain? Heck no! It's easy to live in some high-fallutin' state like Louisiana or Florida. That's why all of the old, feeble North Dakotans move there to decay and die. It takes a real man to live in the great northern plains. So, then, if the North Dakotans want to drop the "North" and just be "Dakotans," by gosh and by golly, let them! No offense, of course, just spoutin' off. I hope no one was offended, eh? |

Did I mention the great scuba diving in North Dakota? As Devils Lake swells from 100,000 acres to 300,000 acres during the wet spell, it swallows up farms, roads, towns and machinery. These structures act as natural reefs, begging to be copied in miniature in our tanks.
