Still To Be Determined
Nebraska: Omaha's leading newspaper called the second congressional district for Obama but the official Nebraska Secretary of State website still shows McCain ahead in that district by 569 votes. We may not know who won that electoral college vote until after results are certified. Nebraska has five electoral college votes: 2 go to the winner of the state and the other three are allocated to the winner in each of the state's three congressional districts.
Missouri: Only NBC has called this state for John McCain. All of the other networks have it as too close to call. McCain has a lead of 5,869 votes but there are a lot of absentee ballots and provisional ballots yet to be counted. If the majority of those ballots are from St. Louis, then Obama could make gains on McCain. We may not know who won Missouri for several days or more.
Alaska: This is getting weirder by the minute. Both Ted Stevens and Don Young appear to have won re-election, BUT there are still more than 50,000 votes yet to be counted. Those are the absentee ballots. In addition to those, there are approximately 18,000 provisional ballots that have to be verified and counted. Usually about two-thirds of those are determined to be valid. That's a lot of uncounted votes considering the size of the election day total of 220,000. Alaska has a lot more caribou than people.
Ted Stevens leads by less than 3,400 votes. If we assume that Mark Begich beats Stevens by 53%-46% in the absentee ballots, that would be a pickup of 3,500 votes. They could then split the provisional ballots 50-50 and Begich would still be the winner. The state is taking forever to count the absentee ballots. Early results appear to show Begich getting about 60% of those votes. It is quite possible that after the final results are tallied, both Stevens and Young may be out of work.
Georgia: Apparently Saxby Chambliss is headed for a runoff against his Democratic opponent. The Chambliss campaign commented that the runoff should be a slam dunk because most of the African-Americans who came out to vote for Obama won't bother to vote in the runoff. Already all of the heavy hitters in both parties are scheduled to campaign for their respective party's candidate. However, there are reports that thousands and thousands of ballots are "missing" in Georgia. Hmmm...?
Minnesota: The Minnesota Secretary of State website has Norm Coleman leading Al Franken by only 221 votes. By state law, there will be a recount.
The Senate: Right now it's Democrats 57 and Republicans 40. That's including the two Independents with the Democrats. There are three seats yet to be determined: Alaska, Minnesota and Georgia. If by some miracle the Democrats manage to win all three, then they would reach the magical number of 60.
However, Joe Lieberman has been told that he will NOT be chairman of the powerful Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs next year and he has said that this is "unacceptable." Little Joe is waiting to see which party will offer him the biggest bribe before making his future plans known. He has already met with Mitch McConnell and McConnell has offered to welcome him into the GOP caucus but that's not where Lying Joe wants to be. Besides, McConnell can't make Lieberman ranking member of any of the major committees without displacing a senior Republican and that's not likely to happen. Lieberman is begging his Democratic colleagues to allow him to retain his chairmanship. To put it mildly, that ain't gonna happen!
Lieberman lost in the Democratic primary to Ned Lamont. He immediately announced that he would run against Lamont in the general election as an Independent. The Republican party immediately switched their support and their money to Lieberman, dumping their own party's candidate. In fact, the Republican party's official candidate received less than 10% of the vote in the general. When Lieberman was campaigning against Lamont, he vowed publicly to support the Democratic party's presidential nominee and to work hard to ensure that the Democrats won the White House and increased their number of seats in the Senate.
Lieberman not only broke that promise, he campaigned across the country side by side with John McCain and Sarah Palin. Lieberman called President-elect Barack Obama a "dangerous" choice for America and said that it was "important that the Democrats not get 60 seats in the Senate." Wow! What a little piece of you know what. Not content to campaign for McCain and Palin, Lieberman even made appearances in support of down-ticked Republican candidates. Kick his scrawny ass out the door. The Republicans can have him. Wait till their base realizes that the war in Iraq is the ONLY issue where Lieberman votes with them. He is a LIBERAL Democrat on every other issue.
Lieberman has a long history of saying whatever he thinks will advance his career at the moment. Back in 1988, when he campaigned for his first term, he promised the voters that if elected he would serve no more than two terms. He broke that solemn promise. He is now in his fourth term.
