    What if? Is it possible?

Here's a thought for eveybody- i'm sure most of us, being reefkeepers, have heard of Red Tide. First, can it happen in a reef aquarium, and second does anybody think that it's theoretically possible for there to be a worldwide Red Tide? If so, what would the effects on the rest of the world be? Just some food for thought...

In an aquarium, yes it is possible because it is simply a bacteria. Chances are 1 in a billion, but it is possible.

Worldwide is highly unlikely because the amount of red tide bacteria that would be needed would have to consume quite literally everything

Red tide is not bacteria. It's phytoplankton -- microscopic algae.

Re: What if? Is it possible?

Some red tides are associated with the production of natural toxins, and sometimes appear to be a result of human activities. This I can only attribute to bacteria, but obviously this is still unknown, but a good possibility.

Either way though I have no clue why I said "bacteria" when I should have said algae. I guess I always think into that human bacteria interaction a tad too much.
