Arrow Final Election Results -- House, Senate & Electoral College

    Another Stunning Year for Democrats

Democrats won the White House with a landslide in the Electoral College: 365 to 173. Missouri was finally decided for McCain by less than 3,000 votes. Obama received 53% of the popular vote to McCain's 46%.

Democrats picked up 8 seats in the Senate and doubled their margin in the House. The House now has 257 Democrats and 178 Republicans. The Senate has 59 Democrats (including Bernie Sanders and Joe Lieberman) and 41 Republicans. That's assuming that Al Franken wins in Minnesota, as projected by the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

The Democrats picked up one governor's seat (Missouri) giving them 29 governors to 21 for the Republicans but if Janet Napolitano, Arizona's Democratic governor, is confirmed as Secretary of Homeland Security, she will be replaced by a Republican.

What was it that schrocat has been saying for the past eight years? Oh, now I remember: Pendulum, duck!

    Hi All,

Yes, but it will be interesting to see how fast it swings back as Obama gets to preside over the 2nd Great Depression. ;)

    FDR had four terms. ;)

P.S. -- Obama's young enough. All we have to do is change the Constitution.

    Ninong,

1 FDR would spin in his grave if he could see the present Democratic Party.

2 This generation won’t tolerate what my dad’s generation lived through.

    Scott,

Since we're talking about economics, how would you describe the past eight years under George W. Bush as compared to the previous eight under the scandalous administration of William Jefferson Clinton?

Would you say that the Republican Bush was better for your retirement portfolio than the Democrat Clinton?

Would you say that the Republican Bush was better at managing the country's national debt than the Democrat Clinton?

How do you explain the fact that the S&P 500 tripled during the eight years of the Clinton administration but it fell 41% during eight years under Bush? A $10,000 investment made on January 20, 1993 was worth $30,000 on January 20, 2001. A $10,000 investment made on January 20, 2001 was worth $5,900 on January 20, 2009. Way to go, Republicans!

That skirt-chasing Democrat had budget surpluses the last three years of his administration. Bush more than doubled the national debt during his eight years in office and he's leaving office with an annual budget deficit estimated to be above $1 trillion. The ONLY president to ever pay off the national debt in full, Andrew Jackson, was a Democrat.

We are fortunate that once again, just as in 1933, a Democrat will take over to clean up a Republican-caused Depression. If you run a filter comparing market gains during Democratic administrations compared to gains during Republican administrations, you will find that the markets do better under Democrats. So if you're worried about your retirement funds, vote for a Democrat.

BTW, during FDR's first four years in office, the DJIA more than tripled in value. He took over in the depths of the Republican-caused Great Depression and spent money like crazy on the New Deal. Apparently Wall Street was thrilled with the results. Let's hope that President Obama can do the same. He's already talking like FDR. And, yes, I'm old enough to remember FDR.
