    Metal in arm ?

When I was a kid, 15, I was hitting 2 hammers together and a peice chipped off of one and shot into my arm like a little bullet.
It has been in there for 31 years and it is resting against a nerve or muscle just under the skin in my upper right arm . I can feel it with my finger when I press down on it.
I get some soreness in my arm once in a while when it presses against a nerve or something .
What type of doctor would be the best to have this thing removed ?
It seems Like it wouldn't be that big a deal to have it removed , Heck, I could almost do it myself because once a friend of mine had a huge magnet and it would pull the skin toward the magnet. But I will not do it myself
I hate to have to go to a couple different doctors just to have them refer me to another.
Any Ideas from anyone in the medical feild ?

I have attached a photo that shows where it is .
    Thanks !!!!

Why have it removed now? After it being in ther for so long its like a part of you know. I mean you have it removed you have no more war stories for the little ones.

The soreness comes and goes .
I work with my arm and it get to be a pain in the A (arm)
I used to do sport shooting once in a while and when I forgot about the metal the next day after shooting my arm would be in some real pain. The last time I shot it took about a month for the pain to go away.
I know, I shoud hold the gun higher up but after shooting all the stations on a sporting clays range with a 12 ga the arm takes a beating anyway when you only do it a couple times a year.
I think we ought to take a look at it. And NO, I don't want a Mikes Hard Lemonade

If it is really just under the surface of the skin as you say then chances are it would be a minor thing they could do in an outpatient setting. Only complication would be from scar tissue formation or any adhesions that may have occurred over 31 years. I would say that without symptoms you might be told to leave it alone but since your work and hobbies seem to aggravate it I'm sure you will have no problems getting it taken care of. Chances are that you will need a referal from your family Dr anyway so start there and they will send you out if needed............or maybe just stick a HUGE Tunze magnet on that sucker!! What an advertisment that would be:eek3:

Bad part is you won't be able to mess with the people at the airport detectors anymore

Yeah, just go see your doc, he'll hook you up with the right guy, probably a General surgeon, it doesn't sound or look too deep, probably could be done outpatient just like saltydog said.

My cousin still has a piece of windshield glass in his elbow from when he rolled his truck about six times several years ago at Phillips INlet bridge outside of Panama City.

Any family doctor who knows how to work a scalpel and syringe could get that out. No sweat.

I once got bit on the thumb by a large Northern Pike way up in Manitoba, and I taught a farmer fishing with me how to take my suture kit and sew me up. 27 stitches and no complications.

Hi FISHme I had small pieces for metal all in my left hand from a construction accident (skill saw caught a piece of metal siding and shot little pieces all in my hand) My doc sent me to a hand and arm surgeon. He did an amazing job getting the metal out, very little nerve damage. Hope this helps, good luck.

Thanks everone for the suggestions. I don't have a family Doc so maybe one of the local emergency medical care places wil have to do for a referral .
Like what was mentioned , seems like a fairly simple removal for any doc , slice and dice
