    Earth Hour

    Anyone participating in Earth Hour?

It'd be kind of cool to sit in total darkness watching the glow from the tank but I'm going to volunteer all my livestock for earth hour and shut down everything on my tank for the hour too.

    From Wikipedia:
Earth Hour is an annual international event created by the WWF, held on the last Saturday of March, that asks households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change.

Earth Hour will next take place on...

Won't your temperature drop a bit, and how will your tank glow with no lights?

    Re: Earth Hour

Thanks Seige for bringing that to our attention. I will definitely participate in Earth Hour. It will be pitch black here in Montana and cold so not sure what to do by candlelight??? I'll have to read up. Some say walk the dog, take a bath by candlelight, look at the stars, etc. No reefland? It won't be easy getting the teenager to flip the switch but we will do it. Every little bit counts! Let's all join in!

    Re: Earth Hour

I was thinking of doing the same. I don't think the temp will drop much unless really cold outside. I have mine off for almost an hour each time I do water changes anyway. I might just throw my home's main breaker.

Edit: What time is it for everyone? I couldn't find a clear time other than 8:30pm. I know my time and Seige's are totally different!

Temp may drop slightly in an hour but not significantly. If it drops below 78 I'll plug in the heater.

I won't be able to see the glow... "I said it'd be nice to watch the glow BUT..." meaning I won't be. Sorry my bad... I shouldn't have thrown that bit in. Just causes confusion.

    Hi Cyn,

Haven't figured out what I'll do yet. Probably sit and talk and watch fish swim around with their little candles.

How about working out? I know I should...

I'm sure your teen will be texting on their cell and won't even notice. Now, you know you should get your teenager to give up all electronics but that'd be virtually impossible.

    Re: Earth Hour

    Hi Lucid,

I think it's 8:30pm for everyone wherever they are so no countries have to black out during daylight or business hours. I'll try and double check that though.

    REMINDER

    EARTH HOUR
    8:30pm-9:30pm

On the east coast it starts in roughly an hour.

Even if you don't shut everything down, shut down as much as you can.

    Re: Earth Hour

It was actually 8:30-9:30 pm local time, Saturday, March 28.

The request was only that "non-essential" power be turned off. Just as you wouldn't turn off life support equipment in a hospital, you should not turn off life support equipment for your aquarium. Obviously the lights can be turned off but you should not turn off the essential equipment, such as pumps and, if you live in a cold climate, the heaters.

    Re: Earth Hour

The exact hour varied by location but whenever you did it it's the thought that counts.

    Re: Earth Hour

For my system I wouldn't consider the pumps as essential for short periods. I turn them off for feedings and other reasons sometimes for much longer then an hour. In any case it's a judgement call by each person what's essential and what isn't. Now if you said your big screen tv was essential to watch the NCAA tournament that might be a little hard to accept.

It was supposed to be 8:30 p.m., Saturday, 28 March 2009, whereever you live on planet Earth according to the official EarthHour.org website.

    Google
That was last year: "On Saturday, March 29, 2008, Earth Hour invites people around the world to turn off their lights for one hour – from 8:00pm to 9:00pm in their local time zone."

This year it was supposed to be 8:30-9:30 p.m. local time, Saturday, March 28, 2009.
