The representative of Her Majesty the Queen, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, Governor General of Canada, helped slaughter a freshly killed seal and ate a piece of its heart on live TV.

"It's absolutely delicious," exclaimed Mrs. Jean before asking for a tissue to wipe her bloody hands.

Apparently the European Union is imposing a ban on seal products from Canada and the governor general, the official representative of the Queen as Canada's head of state, is showing Her Majesty's contempt for the EU's ban.

BBC Update on Michaelle Jean

Canada's Governor General Michaelle Jean has strongly defended her decision to eat raw seal heart as a show of support to seal hunters.

She ate the slice of heart on Monday at an Inuit community feast during which a seal was carved up and pieces of it were passed around.

"This activity is part of life... for thousands in the Arctic. It is vital for them," said Ms Jean.

That's utter and complete bullsh!t and she knows it. The EU ban is aimed at the commercial hunt of mainly baby harp seals that takes places in the northeast of Canada every year, it's not aimed at native peoples. Idiot!

The governor general is representative of Canada's head of state, Queen Elizabeth II.

The incident came weeks after the EU voted to ban Canadian seal products, probably from before the 2010 hunting season, on the grounds that the seal hunt is cruel.

Inuit people are partially exempt from the ban, but cannot trade pelts and other seal goods with Europe.

In other words, the native peoples are exempt from the ban as long as they're using the seals as "part of their way of life." Their way of life does not encompass shipping seal pelts to Europe.

Her action was praised by Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and commercial seal hunters.

Harper is a Tory. He's an idiot.

Animal welfare groups have long argued that the clubbing of seal pups by hunters is barbaric.

They are often skinned while still alive. The mothers are ignored because it's only the white pelts of the baby seals that bring big bucks in the Russian and Chinese fur markets.

The government has authorised the killing of more than 300,000 seals this year.

The Canadian government condones the clubbing of baby harp seals, which are then immediately skinned in full view of their grieving mothers. These baby seals are not being killed by native peoples as part of their "way of life," they're being killed by commercial "fishermen" who kill them only for their white pelts!!! The pelts are shipped to Norway, where they are processed before being sold to Russia and China. This is even worse than the Japanese who try to pretend that they are killing whales to do "important research."

The Canadian government continues to support this cruel and barbaric practice in spite of the fact that the majority of Canadians would like to see it stopped. I think this is one of those things that you just know is wrong. You don't really have to think about it. You just know it. Anyone who has to think about it probably needs a mental health exam.

P.S. -- 98% of the seals killed in the commercial hunt are pups under the age of 3 months! They are killed strictly for their pelts.

The British monarch is still Canada's official head of state and the governor general is the official representative of Her Majesty the Queen. One can only wonder if the Queen approves of her representative's strong endorsement of the annual slaughter of hundreds of thousands of baby harp seals for their pelts.
