He took a hike?
That's the latest version of Where in the World Is Governor Sanford. His office has lied repeatedly. First they said they were in touch with him but would not say where he was. Then, several hours later, they admitted they had not been in touch with him and really didn't know where he was. They even lied to the Republican Lt. Governor's office.
How can the governor of a state go missing for five days with no one in the state government being able to contact him in the case of an emergency? At least his wife was honest about it. She said she didn't know where he was and she hadn't spoken to him in several days.
Why would you not even call your young kids on Father's Day? Goppie "family values" are strange.South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford hasn't been seen since Thursday. His staff says he's just taking some time to clear his mind and gather thoughts since the stimulus fight and that he was been known to travel without his security. But when he left, he didn't even tell his wife where he was headed, authorities went so far as to track his cell phone and his Republican lieutenant governor said he'd tried to reach Sanford, but his staff misled even him. Twitter messages were left in Sanford's name yesterday about the state's government structure and Sunday about the stimulus. Last night, his staff said he was actually hiking in Appalachian Trail.I think they probably needed a warrant to track his cell phone signal. Or maybe they just called the NSA. They know where everybody is and what everybody is talking about, or writing about in their emails.
You don't head south to Atlanta if you're looking for the Appalachian Trail. I smell a bit of hanky-panky here. Maybe he has an Ensign problem?
I love this article in The Australian:
Case of walkabout South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford grips USMARK Sanford's wife said she did not know where he was. His deputy knew nothing. After revising the story several times, even his office spokesman admitted he was not sure.
The case of South Carolina's missing Governor set tongues wagging across the US yesterday, after no one had heard from him for five days.
Last Thursday, Mr Sanford left his governor's mansion in the state capital, Columbia. He was seen driving out alone in his security detail's black Chevrolet Suburban 4WD.
Mr Sanford's last known location was reportedly a long way from home, a few days later, after a mobile phone tower picked up his signal near Atlanta in the adjoining state of Georgia.
The disappearance could be dismissed as a man seeking time alone, and no one has suggested his safety was in doubt.
But Mr Sanford is no ordinary wanderer. He is not only South Carolina's head of state, and normally accompanied by bodyguards. In recent months he has been touted as a potential Republican Party candidate for president in 2012. Some commentators speculated yesterday that Sanford had already blown his chances after the demonstration of bizarre behaviour.
The Republicans are in a funk after losing the presidency to the Democrats' Barack Obama and getting thrashed in congressional elections. Last week, John Ensign, a senator from Nevada and a potential presidential nominee strongly backed by conservative Christians, effectively bowed out of the 2012 race after admitting to having had an affair with a former staffer, amid allegations of blackmail.

Mr Sanford's wife, Judy, confirmed yesterday her husband had been gone for several days and she did not know where he was. He appeared not to have contacted Mrs Sanford or their four sons over the Father's Day weekend. Speaking from the family's beach house on Sullivan Island, Mrs Sanford told South Carolina's The State newspaper: "He was writing something and wanted some space to get away from the kids."
Mr Sanford's office initially issued a statement saying the Governor was taking time away from the office to "recharge". Spokesman Joel Sawyer later said the Governor was hiking on the Appalachian Trail, but confirmed staff had not heard from him.
Mr Sanford's deputy, Lieutenant Governor Andre Bauer, said power had not been transferred to him in Mr Sanford's absence.
