It's a good thing that was a substantial boat and not some little boat without a deep keel. The Intrepid is a 32-ft steel sloop that is used for sailing lessons. It's a mess right now, so lessons have been suspended for several weeks until repairs have been completed.

Update: Video confirmation of whale jumping on sailboat!

NBC News showed the video last night. Apparently there were whale-watching tourists in the area at the time and that's how we got the photos and this video clip.

It was a juvenile southern right whale, 11-14 meters long, and they're known for breaching a lot.
