They are, in my opinion, going to be about even, but I would give the nod to cable, that is if you can keep your cable provider to keep the system up and running....

taking in to account where I live (metro detroit area) - I would say Cable. I have cable and love it - yes at times it can lag but overall still more reliable than DSL - my brother in law has DSL thru ameritech and hates it.
Service is great (at least here it is) - go with cable. Also, sometimes if you have cable TV from the same provider they knock $$ of your cable modem bill. (mediaone/comcast does or at least did)

I only have DSL available in my area, so I can't compare, but there is no slow down peak or off peak.
I usually average speed around 680k, but in reality that is about 1.5m down, and 125k up Now it did take Pac Bell almost a month to get all the bugs out of the DSL service at their end, but it has been flawless since.

St. Pete huh....
I'd go HellSouth DSL. They shoot for 45.00 a month, but you can haggle. Other providers can offer a lower rate, but don't throw in the connection devices for free. (Rapido is one I believe) The Florida cable modem providers are notorious for poor performance, service and support. Changes in ownership in North Florida have not resolved the issues IMO. For a real laugh, set the tech who comes by your house in front of an NT 4.0 box...the wide-eyed look of terror they exhibit as they see NT displayed on the start menu is freakin priceless. l8r

I'm a DSL kinda guy myself. I've had DSL from PacBell(SBC) for 1.5 years now. Very reliable. No degradation in bandwidth...ever. The primary difference between cable and DSL is aggregate vs. dedicated bandwidth. If you live in an area w/ alot of cable users you "may" see degradation. One of my friends has cable in a large neighborhood and I work on her PC from time to time. I have seen performance degradation(I can't verify that it was from haevy usage though) whereas I've never suffered. Just my .02, HTH
Now if only I can get my 3 teenagers off of Morpheus I'll be happy ![]()

Almost all cable companies limit their upstream to 128k, most DSL companies offer 384K. I've got Covad/Earthlink and its 1.5/1.5, I'm also fortunate to be close to a central station so I usually get 1.0/1.2mb.
Everyone I know who has cable wishes they could get DSL. My business partner has atleast one outage a day. Not a big deal when you are a casual user, but when your online 24/7 it is enough of a hassle that he's ordered a OC3 since he can't get reliable DSL. But from looking at everyone else's experience, I would say talk to people who are local to you that have both, and decide from there. As from what I'm seeing in my area (DSL rules) is opposite for what I'm seeing in some place like Florida (DSL sucks.) |

Eses raises a good point. Stability is important(at least in my book). I've got a customer running a business application AND VoIP(Voice over IP) between two locations over DSL. Solid as a rock.

Where I live, it is more economical to go with cable by about 20bucks a month. I like cable but the 6 months we had intermittent probs (down for 3 days or so every 14-20 days) finally we told them to get us a NEW modem AND BAMMM! no more probs since about 9 months ago...oh well $0.02 worth right there.

Here ya be!...
AT&T Broadband Offers Jacksonville $100,000 Cable Company Offers Settlement For Poor Customer Service Posted: 7:59 a.m. EDT October 24, 2001 JACKSONVILLE -- Officials of AT&T Broadband are offering $100,000 to an education foundation in Jacksonville to make up for poor service in the area during the summer. The cable provider and the city are debating how much AT&T should be fined. The city council would have the final say in any deal. Back in June, more than 1,100 complained to the city about lousy cable service. That was about double the usual number for the first five months of the year. AT&T said that it has been working to improve customer service. Since the spike in June, the number of complaints has dropped. Dropped, but not significantly...

I had DSL for over a year until 2 months ago when I sold my condo and bought a house. I got a very good 1200 / 128 connection until about the last month. I didn't bother calling since I knew I was moving. I have had RR cable for two days and it rocks at 1999 / 287. So far so good.

I have been using Road Runner Cable for the past four months or so and it is great. It is very fast and reliable. DSL and cable are both fast. Choose the one that is most reliable in your area. If both are equally reliable then choose the cheaper of the two, which is usually cable.
