Take it from somebody in your dad's shoes.................get your @$$ to work (school) and stop farting around. My 18 year old daughter takes the bus to college (10 miles) I have the $$ ready to buy her a car but she's to lazy to even look for one......I have yet to see her study one minute, There's not much I do about that but I can show her the door.

So sorry to hear you even have a car to drive to school. My parents wouldn't let me buy one nor buy me one until i was a senior and then I got to drive a mercury lynx wagon.

Be happy you even have the chance to drive a car - most kids let alone adults do not..

Do you have a chauffeur?

The minimum driving age in New York State is 16. You may not drive in New York State if you are under 16, even if you are licensed in another state. Also, drivers age 16 and 17 are subject to both the restrictions imposed in the home state and the New York restrictions for junior operators. For important information on driving restrictions for learner permits and for drivers under 18, see our brochure Learner Permits and Junior Licenses.

Before you come in to apply for your permit:

You must be at least 16 years old when you apply.

Hey Golfish! Let's say you and I start a "pissed-off dad's club!"
Hellllooo! All you kids out there! Take a deep breath and shout out "PERSONAL ACCOUNTABILITY!" I spend four grand a year to send my oldest to a prep school. The word "deficiency" strikes fear in his heart. He knows the consequences of poor grades and/or lack of effort. I'll go to the wall for him if I feel he's being unfairly treated, but he sure as hell knows what I expect and that he needs to work hard to meet those expectations. The hand holding stopped a few years back. JWT

Don't really know you and don't know your daughter, but anyone willing to ride 10 miles on a bus everyday to college sounds somewhat responsible. Until I got a car, I rode the bus 1.5 - 2 hours one way to get to work every day. My district manager was and still is impressed that I stuck with it for nine whole months. He figured that with travel time both ways and the hours each day that I was working that I was in reality putting in roughly 16 - 20 hour work days. For a 24 year old fast food manager, I stuck it out far longer than anyone else in my situation that he has ever seen. One year and two months later, I am still at that job and doing great.

You may not see her study, but how well is she doing? Some kids just don't need to study. As far as not wanting to go find a car, if I was in her situation, you could hand me the money, I would thank you and in a weary and groggy state, staring at the green stuff in my hands, wonder what on earth you had just given me.

Anyway, JMO...

jwtrojan44,
My daughter went to the best schools, We spent 20,000 just for High school (Catholic, all girls) Out of 230 girls she was 226th in her class. Even then, she could have gotten some kind of scholarship(sp?) but she was too lazy to apply......Now, I get to do it all over again, TWICE...I have a 3 year old daughter who is the light of my life, of course I love my 18 year old but things change when they stop holding your hand. It seems like yesterday, I would walk her to school holding her hand all the way, then about 9-10 we stopped. I guess its not cool to be seen holding your dads hand at that age We are expecting a Boy in January. This will be a whole new thing for me, I'm used to raising girls

Mark,
I never gave a rats @$$ what her grades were, as long as she tried. When the progress reports came and ithey said she didn't turn in her homework, then, I would blow my top........How hard is it to do you ^$#@%^ homework!!!! When I said get to work. This is what I meant.

Man, I'm not down playin your problems Fishkid but...I'd give anything to have those problems again! Your dad cares, acknowledge that. Just feel lucky that not having a car only means your social life is taxed and not your professional life. Think you got problems now....wait untill you get out of school and have to maintain 50 professional hours a week, take care of a mortgage, car loans, school loans, credit bills, utility bills, life insurance, health insurance, car insurance, a retirement portfolio, kids college fund, a wife or girlfriend and a family.
Then talk about not being able to install a subwoofer in your car this weekend cause dad's a little ticked about you not doing well in school

Can I join the pissed off dad's club? My 13 year old flunked last year due to laziness not stupitidy. How about doing your homework just being too lazy to turn it in? He was so sure we would be glad to pay for summer school so he wouldn't flunk, boy did he get a surprise. Now it seems he is doing the same thing this year, it's going to really suck doing the same grade 3 times.

so you have this car before you can even drive the thing? Sheesh. Be glad that your dad even cares. When I was your age (like the rest of us) its easy to think that dad is just mean - but theres a reason behind it and you won't figure it out till you graduate from school and then have a career, wife, house note. car notes, credit cards, house repairs, vacations, blah blah blah to worry about like Firefish said......

If your dad wants to sell my SUV as well he is more then welcome to. :P I need to get rid of it in 2 months (legally) when my company car comes (escape XLT).
