Here's one for Ripley's Believe It or Not:
Fourteen men from Syria -- a state sponsor of terrorism -- entered the United States this week on student visas to attend a flight school in Fort Worth, Texas, an Immigration and Naturalization Service official admitted today.
The men were "checked out" by the State Department before they obtained the M-1 visas for vocational education, and none of them was on "a watch list," said Tomas Zuniga, an INS spokesman in Dallas. "Everything was on the up-and-up."
A State Department official said there was no prohibition against issuing visas to flight-school students from the Middle East as long as they meet all visa requirements, United Press International reported today.
The FBI was notified about the Syrians because the men arrived in two groups, which concerned INS officials at the Dallas airport.
"Seven came on Sunday and seven came in on Monday, so we thought it was a little suspicious, and we notified the FBI and they are aware of these 14," he said. "They did not show up on anybody's want list, so they were appropriately admitted."
To quote a certain peacenik folk song: "When will they ever learn?"
