Safer than a car.

Statistically it is much worse than commercial airline travel, at least before Sept. 11th. Nice Chicago pic. Makes me homesick.

Well I've flown w/ a buddy of mine who's a pilot. We've made several trips in small Cessna's and Piper's. I remember one time when we were flying in So. Cal and the weather took a turn for the worse. At the time he wasn't instrument rated and we had to land in San Diego. Jesus! We were pissin' our pants flying into that airport w/ all the commercial craft and bad weather around us. Not fun.

Well as a flight instructor, I spend a lot of time in SMALL general aviation aircraft. What people fail to realize is how many of these small airplanes are actually flying at any given time in relation to the number of accidents, which are usually survivable. Statistically speaking you have a better chance of being struck by lightning TWICE after winning the state lotto on a bright sunny day.
There are way more people trying to kill me on the DRIVE to the airport much less the airplane or a student for that matter. The media blows it WAAAAAYYYYYYY out of proportion IMO

According to the "General Aviation, Status of the Industry, Related Infrastructure, and Safety Issues" report submitted to the Congressional Requestor in August of 2001, per 100,000 general aviation flight hours there are an average of 7 accidents resulting in an average of 1.5 fatalities. General Aviation aircraft are responsible for about 50 MILLION flight hours a year..... 88% of the general aviation accidents are a result of pilot error, misjudgement... not the equipment
How many people are killed in car accidents in this country each year????? each day ???? Flying is very safe in my opinion, but like with anything chance always looms.

Couldn't agree more! Have a family member who is a pilot and just recently bought himself a new plane (www.jetprop.com). My dad flew for years and has just recently started trying to renew his rating. He's got me interested and I have been looking into schools. Don't really have the time to dedicate to it right now, but I really like the idea, especially having a couple family members with thier own aircraft. My great uncle is looking at getting an Eclipse. Anyone heard of it?
