Saw LOTR last night.
I have never read the book, so I have no idea what to expect. The locations and CG was awsome! The acting was good and the script is, well, a classic. I just found it a little too deep. Without knowing what is going on, you can quickly get lost. It was a very confusing movie. There just was not a whole lot of detail about the characters given. If you have not read the book, then don't see the movie. That is the exact opposite of what I would normally say. Overall, it was an excelent movie, but it is geared towards those who have read the book. The 11 minute intro is no where near enough. Comparing to another epic movie series, Star Wars, Star Wars is in many ways better. Not that LOTR is bad, but you can sit down and watch Star Wars for the first time and completely understand what is going on. I guess that is because Star Wars was written to be a movie and Tolkien never envisioned such a thing happening. I am going to watch the other two movies when they come out and I will buy them on video, but I am going to read the book first. Mark

I understand your problem here, it really helps knowing some of the background on the characters. The thing is, there have been tens of thousands of people who have read and loved these books, that any variation from the story line, or even simplification by the movie producers would have caused a huge uproar by the audience.
I never read the book(s) either, but I didn't have any problem following the movie. But I did read the spoof "Bored of the Rings" when my husband and I were dating. And I've played Dungeons and Dragons with my teenagers, which has Middle Earth based characters. Everybody percieves things a little differently. Since I have very little interest in science-fiction and futuristic movies, I found Star Wars a little hard to follow. But give me something historical like Man for All Seasons, and it comes alive for me. So, yes, it helps to have read, or at least be familiar with Tolkien's books, but don't let it deter you from seeing this awsome movie if you haven't had any background. Just do a quick search on the internet to familiarize yourself, then go see one of the best movies of the decade. And for Pete's sake, don't do what some of my fellow movie patrons did. They brought young children!!! This movie is WAY to SCARY for young kids.

Frito. Then there's Pepsi and Moxey, Goodgulf, Dildo- I don't know if the computer censor will allow that-, Farrah Slacks. I can't remember any of the female charactor's names, or the charactor equivelant to Aragorn.
Darn, after seeing Lord of the Rings, I want to read "Bored" again, but I've searched the whole house and can't find that book anywhere. I know we have it, too. I'm with you, I'd love to see the spoof made into a movie. Oh, my husband just reminded me--Aragorn was Arrow Shirt, the monster in the cave was the Villa Nova Ball Hog, and the dwarf was Leg o' Lamb.
