What is the story with these many books called 'the history of The Lord of the Rings'

They're a series of books that have been compiled by Tolkien's son that details certain events(based upon Tolkien's notes) in Middle Earth beginning with the First Age through Third Age. I have read a couple pertaining to the War of the Ring and Third Age. They're pretty darn cool, but are more like reference material than anything else. Of course I haven't read them all.
