I have heard of this being done by pet stores very close to the ocean that they dig so deep and BAM! you have virgin saltwater! Can someone point me in the direction for more literature on this? I would like to study it in more depth and if/how I would treat it before use on reef tanks?

I had to reply on this one although I can't help ya.
I got a saltwater well on my place here in NW Pa. 38 feet down. If it was freshwater it would have been great. We used a industrial pump on it and pumped for three days-- never saw the bottom of the well. We had the water tested and was told the salt content matched ocean water-- that was 20 yrs ago. We capped it off and it has been sittin ever since. I never messed with it but I'm sure it won't work in a fishtank- sounds too weird. I'm thinking maybe this year I'll check it out again- hoping it cleared up to freshwater and put it to use. |

it will work on a fishtank!!!!you should have that salt well water tested to see whats in it.ive heard of great success from people using a constant trickle going into the tank from a saltwater well.i beleive the waikiki aqaurium has a few setups like that.

Organicreefer,
Yeah, maybe. the guy that lives across the road has been bugging me for about 5 yrs to look into it. It's not high on the list of things that have to be done. A lot has to do with expense. The well is about 150 yds from the house and across a creek. I'm looking at a pump, pipe, getting the land cleared to lay the pipe, digging the ditch, and worst of all dealing with the EPA about running the pipe under a creek. I would rather do this if I was close to the ocean. At least there would be a chance of getting real ocean water. Scuba, I think I would talk to a well driller in your area. When the driller was at my place for about 4 days puttin in my house well it was surprising about how much he knew what was down there, where to find it, and how deep. Well, i guess they should know because they spend every day drilling holes. Bill |
