    Thinkin' about learning to sail

    Well,

My wife and I have been kickin' around the idea of getting a nice sailboat for the Lake up here. Heck! Lake Tahoe is perfect for sailing and we haven't ever gone out on it. Here's what we're thinking. It's a Catalina 30' that sleeps 5. It's be great for taking the boys out on the lake and going diving. Nice boat, eh?

    Look Away From The Light!!

There is only one hobby where you can spend more money to get less faster than in reefing, and that is sailing!

Although it is a lot of fun...you know, I live on a lake, I should think about buying a 36' Hunter and.....

    Noooooooooooooooooo!!!!!

Well, the boat we're getting is going to cost us about 10K. I know we'll need to get a trailer(another 2.5K). Moorings up here on the lake run about $400 for the summer season. A dinghy comes w/ the boat, so we can use that or a taxi out to our boat. This is all part of a bigger plan. We know a few people who have purchased 41'(or bigger) "live aboards" and are planning on sailing the world. In fact, one of my customers is giving us a tour today of her 41'. Her and her husband are retiring in 4 years, selling everything they have up here in Tahoe and sailing for the Caribbean. Jemma and I have always wanted to island hop in Indonesia...This boat(the Catalina) is merely a "vehicle" to allow us to learn to sail and see if we really enjoy it. See where I'm going with this?

I would love it!! But Me and big boats will never work. I like to fish more than boating. I bought a 16' deep V back in '79 and I still have it and use it. At times (before kids) I found it too big and picked up a wide 14' canoe to hit the smaller spots. But living near one of the Great Lakes I have come real close to getting a 25' Lund fishing boat.
Don't know much about sailboats but 12 grand for a 30' sounds good to me. The 25' Lund I was looking at was $12500 15 yrs ago.
I would recheck the mooring charge. $400 is hard to believe. Here it will run up to $2000 or more if you can get a space- there's a waiting list. If your wife is on your side- your half way there.
    Oh yeah, Very nice boat!!
