Question For You IT/IS Pros Out There
I have been helping maintain a small network of 8 PC's for a not-for-profit in our town. They operate on Windows 98.
I would like to upgrade their OS to a more stable platform, as many of the employees are not very computer-savvy. They do a lot of scanning, photo manipulation, multi media work, etc. Should I consider Windows 2000 or XP Professional for their upgrade? |

I think more would recomend 2000, but I found it to be more business like (maybe what you're looking for?) Iv'e been using XP for a couple of weeks now and find it very easy to use. I didn't even have to load my scanners or digital cameras driver or software, XP had its own. I would expect more problems if you were to load XP over Win98 though, even 2000 might give you a little fight going over 98. If there is a way for you to back up your data I would recomend you start on a clean hard drive and reload your software. You could make short work of it by just getting a new Hard drive, loading 2000 or XP, loading your programs and files and config. the os for any peripherals you plan on adding then using the Norton Ghost program to mirror all the other hard drives to your new one. It's alot easier then doing each hard drive individually...fwiw

I'd recommend 2000... if they're running 98, chances are, their computers won't be able to handle XP and its pretty cpu process hogging desktop interface. Upgrading should be easy... Just pop the win2k cd in, click upgrade and it should do just about everything for you. Good Luck, let us know if you run into problems.

I recommend Windows 2000 Professional. I have 2 (soon to be 4) computers set up as a network at home. All are running Windows 2000. They are running much better with 2000 than they ever did with 98.

Hi All,
I evaluate and recommend OS platforms for the thousands of computers that my company maintains. I would recommend Windows 2000 PRO. By far, the most stable platform that Microsoft has made to date. Regards, Scott Passe

Win2k Pro would also more than likely be the cheaper choice...
Since with the "legal" version of WinXP I believe you have to call up Microsoft to activate the OS or some big brother type crap like that... I would go for the Win2k stability though... |

There is no phone call to make to use XP. Since installing XP a few weeks ago, I haven't had a single problem. I dont think it's an all that bad OS. The key is to install it on a clean drive with hardware that has been certified compatable with XP. This is the first time I've never had a problem loading an OS. I know alot of people like 2000 but 2000 was just a huge problem installing, even at work when loading 2000 nothing seemed to take. I didn't even have to load a driver for my scanner, camera, printer or sound card when loading XP. I think alot of people are running into problems when they do the upgrade over an existing OS and/or using software that is not compatable with XP.
Just a success story with XP... ![]()

I was not conveying that I have had problems with XP. I just dislike the new layout of the operating system. Things are more hidden, it just seems more "Mac like". Win2k would most likely perform better on the machines that he currently has.
