so youre saying that his looking/talking to other teams is about contract negotiations???
i dont think thats the case...mooch looked like hes was about to cry on the news this morning.......he said the "organization"has told him its in his businees interest to listen to other teams..... somehow i dont think hes looking to get more money, which is the only reasont to look at other offers right? |

What I told you in that other thread (you have to read two replies that I posted) is that all is not hunkydory between Mariucci and Walsh... that Mariucci had his agent request a new contract at $3.6 million a year and that the organization told him they would not entertain any ideas about a new contract at this time... that the 49ers did the same thing to Siefert: Refused to discuss a contract extension going into his final contract year... and that, as a result, the 49ers and Siefert parted ways in spite of his regular season record.
I also predicted that a 12-4 regular season record would not be enough to save Mariucci, that he would need to win the NFC Championship. It's a personality thing between him and the powers that be. The same thing is going on between Gruden and Al Davis across the Bay. Ninong ![]() |

Yes, I expected both Hearst and Mariucci to be back next year. I did not expect things to blow up this soon. But I also felt that if Mariucci failed to win the NFC Championship, his job security was in jeopardy.
The 12-4 regular season record only postponed something that has been in the works for more than a year now. If the 49ers were interested in keeping Mooch (which they are NOT), they would have at least discussed a contract extension with his agent. But they didn't... because they're NOT interested in keeping him. I wish we could get Gruden but Al Davis is so ornery that he will probably hold on to him just to make his life miserable for another year. I hope we don't end up with Denny Green (another Walsh protege). Ninong ![]() P.S. -- I thought Mariucci was going into his final contract year but I just found out that he has two years remaining. Anyway, York told him he would not discuss a contract extension until after the end of the next season. |

Lets face it, Bill Walsh runs the show and well he should. Here's what I say to Mariucc "don't let the door hit you on the A$$ on the way out, and take the POS Garcia with you"
I'm with George, I would love to see Gruden come across the bay but Davis wont let that happen. 12-4 means squat to me until they are the NFC champs. |

I like Mariucci, but like Gruden too, and think that it would be cool to have him with the team.....although I think G. is a good coach, much of my like has to do with the fact that he lives about 7 miles from where I grew up.
![]() I just wonder what Mora woud do in the event that Steve leaves?? That would worry me more that Mariucci. He has done wonders with the young defense they have. How close are his loyalties to Mooch? That could be a problem. -Perry |

The Buccaneers are reportedly offering him $5 million a year for 5 years (fully guaranteed) to be their Coach & GM. The compensation to the 49ers is expected to be a first, a second and a third round pick.
We should know something later today or tomorrow. The only thing left is for Mariucci to say yes. Ninong ![]() |

This is too funny to be believed! The Bucs offered Mariucci $5 million a year for 5 years and he countered with $6 million a year for 7 years = $42 million. So they hired Jon Gruden instead. I guess that means they finally agreed to Al Davis' terms for compensation to the Raiders that they originally rejected as too steep. Ninong P.S. -- So... where does this leave Mariucci and the 49ers??? Talk about overplaying your hand! What makes this whole thing so funny is that the Buccaneers and the 49ers had already agreed on a compensation package and the only thing remaining was for Mariucci to say yes to their offer yesterday. Looks like between him and his agent they screwed up big time. He just blew a guaranteed $25 million deal. Now he's left with $2.2 million a year for his remaining two years with the Niners knowing that they would really, really like him to leave. ![]() |

Cool!
We got Gruden! Next season might not be so bad after all! ...now if we could only trade Warren Sapp's mouth.

ESPN has finally come out with the story:
A source close to the Buccaneers told ESPN's Sal Paolantonio that Gruden has a five-year deal worth $17.5 million, or $3.5 million per season. As compensation for Gruden, the Raiders will receive first- and second-round draft picks in 2002, a first-round pick in 2003, and a second-round pick in 2004, the source told Paolantonio. Oakland will not receive any cash or any players. The deal was reached between all parties at 4 a.m. ET Monday. Wow! Two first round picks and two second round picks to get a coach with only one year remaining on his contract. That Al Davis is tough! I still don't like him though. Does this mean that the Tampa Bay GM can stop talking to Atlanta now? ![]() Ninong ![]() |

Good for TB bad for the Raiders. I still like the Raiders but I think its pretty much over for them. They had their chance and with Gruden gone things don't look good..........

Just think of where this whole mess leaves everybody: The TB GM was almost out of a job (if Mariucci had accepted the $25 million offer to be Coach & GM) and was interviewing for the Atlanta job and Mariucci now knows for sure that the Yorks are not impressed when his agent mentions that he is being courted by other teams. They were not impressed that Notre Dame had made him an offer, even though that offer was reported to be a long term contract for $35 million.
So what does Mooch do now? Does he pretend that he really didn't want to leave SF after all? Funny thing is that that is proably close to the truth. He really wants SF to pay him the big bucks and give him a long term extension. Now everything hangs on what the team does next season. I don't think they will repeat their 12-4 2001 season; they will be lucky to go 10-6. I can't see him getting anything close to what he just passed up in Tampa Bay unless he wins the NFC Championship. The only one who comes out of this smelling like a rose is Al Davis. Two first round picks and two second round picks for a coach with only one year left on his contract who had already announced that he would never resign with Davis. Ninong |

Now they're saying that Al Davis got $8 million from TB in addition to the two first round picks and two second round picks.
