British Troops Mistakenly Invade Spain
Officials Apologize, Say Map-Reading Error Likely

Britain's Defense Ministry is apologizing for accidentally invading Spain over the weekend.

About 20 Royal Marines went slightly off course in an amphibious exercise and stormed a Spanish beach Sunday morning near the British colony of Gibraltar, a British Defense Ministry spokesman said.

A spokesman for the British military said it is "regrettable and embarrassing" that troops stormed a beach near Gibraltar. Spain and Great Britain are at odds over the future of the British colony of Gibraltar and have been trying to reach an agreement for autonomy for Gibraltar by summer.

The spokesman said the accidental assault was probably caused by a map-reading error.

On Sunday, locals watched in astonishment as about 20 heavily armed combat troops hit a beach in La Linea -- in Spanish territory, several yards from the border with Gibraltar.

A Spanish news agency reported that the soldiers retreated after fishermen and local police told them they'd invaded Spain.
