I think its a P.C. (you know....computer ). I think they are geared toward the gamers.....

If I am right...can I ask why you wouldn't want to build one on your own? Less expensive, and a great thing to learn. Mine still kicks butt....and its almost 6 months old (yet to be outdated, or slow on anything I've thrown at it). Best of all, only paid a little over a grand (similar computers are still more expensive now).

I agree with Perry, cheaper to build your own, and although the Alienware PCs are easily upgraded (as they are very oriented towards First time gamers who will typically build their 2nd or 3rd computer), you will learn more if build a PC yourself.

Agreed,

Build your own. My kids see the adds in the Gaming rags and they all laugh cuz their dad(me) built them a better machine for less. If you'd like some pointers, drop me a line and I'll be happy to spec you a machine. For example, last week I upgraded my machine. I'm a PC snob so I buy nothing but the best. Here's an outline for a superior platform:

ASUS P4T-E motherboard(top quality, endless overclocking combo's)
Intel P4 1.7GHz Socket 478 CPU
1GB of RDRAM(400MHz bus speed)
SoundBlaster Audigy Platinum(AWESOME sound!!!)
Lian-Li All Aluminum Mid-Tower Case, brushed aluminum finish

And of course 80GB's of Hard Disk Space on Seagate Barracuda's in a SCSI Array off of an Adaptec 39160 SCSI Host Adapter(no IDE drive can touch this combo!!!)

Currently, I've overclocked this setup to 1.88 GHz without a single "hiccup". Gonna bump it up beyond 2GHz this weekend.

Anyway, the above spec's(I've left out some items but you get the picture) are WAY cheaper than what you'll pay at AlienWare's website. Be glad to help if you're interested.

Unfortunately since it's an HP I'm gonna recommend that you scrap the machine and build(or buy) as "generic" a machine as possible. HP, Dell, Gateway, Compaq...these companies don't design and/or manufacture their motherboards/PC's with the upgrader in mind. One certainly cannot overclock an one of these platforms due to the lack of options in the CMOS/BIOS.

The Intel Celeron is a good overclocker...but you have to match the CPU with a motherboard that will allow you to overclock. Is building a new machine something you'd like to do? If you'd like me to spec a gaming platform, email me and I'll be glad to help(spec it, find the best price etc.).

Email'd ya back w/ my opinion and suggestions. Overall you made good choices. BTW, if you're eventually gonna overclock your machine. Get a good HeatSink and Fan combo(ThermalTake Volcano 7+). A real good chassis(all aluminum) can't hurt either(Lian-Li cases). HTH

So ya gonna go w/ the 1.7GHz or the 1.8GHz Northwood?
(hear Dave whisper..."Northwood, get the Northwood")

Three letters...... AMD!!!!!!

Thats all I have to Say....

Ok, maybe not all. The Intel isn't a bad chip, but half of the money goes to the advertising. Go with the AMD. From long term users, its supposed to be more stable, and better handles the overclocking. Most of my info came from Geek.com. Not saying Dave don't know what he's talking about. If it wan't for him I would have ended up buying another crappy pre-made, and not spent the hour putting it together myself.

i know AMD's are great but i have a bad history with them ( i had 2 pcs with them and they sucked big time!) I almost got in a fight over which is better amd or intel (that would be funny: Principle: "why were you boys fighting" me: "he said my intel was wack" )

i heard someone, like 2 days ago, say that amd's are awesome for overclocking but arent as good as intels at handling multitasking (sounded wierd to me)

It really depends on what you are using it for. In reality, unled you are doing extrememly intense 3d rendering ,while compiling large VB projects, while watching a movie off the hardrive, and playing the latest graphics intensive game, you probably won't notice a difference.

AMD makes an awesome chip, and beyond that, they are dirt cheap compared to a comparable chip.

I see the athlon xp 2000 for about 230, and the intel Pent4 2.0 for around 360. For that price difference you could add a gig of DDR. Northwood is on the forefront of chip manufacturing with the .13 mic, but seriously, goto geek.com and read some of the comparisons. The intel is just as much a 2.0 gig as a 10k blueline lamp is 10k.

Just my opinion.
