Windows upgrade

I'm trying to install win XP and eliminate ME. I keep getting an error message stating that file "shell32.dll" can not be located. I installed XP on my girlfriend's computer without a hitch, she has/had ME as well. How do I fix this?

Thanks,
Scott

Scott,

Are you trying to upgrade or do a fresh install? For XP, I would recommend reformatting hard drive and do a full fresh install. All problems should diminish.

I fyou have reason for not doing so, such as importatnt files, or programs that you there that you dont have the cd for, and such, then I would search the Windows install help online.

I'll try to help and post if i find something.

Regards,
Ilham

ELmo is correct indeed. I had the same error after making a few system changes on my ME system. Reformat Reinstall and load XP. with the shell error though, you are probably locked out of windows totally and so you will probably want to get into backup what you need before the reformat reinstall.

To do this, Do a dirty install of ME again...Basically an overlay. This is a patch ..not a fix....Backup what you need and reformat reinstall and load XP and youll be smooth sailing

BTW, If youre system boots straight into windows, you are going to need to change the boot sequence from and bump up the cd rom. WHen it prompts you BOot from HD or Boot from CDrom, to do the dirty install, you will need to boot from cd rom and follow the instructions.
I believe its f1 whiles the system is just freshly started to bring up the boot menu screen....pretty sure..my memory is foggy this time of night.
Good luck and hope this helps

Jason.
