Show us where you live.

Let's see some of the architectural styles and greenery of your residence.

Here's mine up in the great north. Surrounded by 200-250 year old oaks.

The picture is dark but the best one I have. You can't see the landscaping at all unfortunately.

Here's my sisters house on the river...

Notice the sign??? As a note the Colorado river does not contain Manatees... but it sure slows down the speed boats and jet ski's in the area.

Triggers,

How do you get "lawn stripes?"

I've mowed back and forth, but no stripes.

the stripes basically form as a result of the lawn mower wheels pressing down on the grass. as the grass grows the stripes slowly disappear. that pic i believe was taken same day as mowed.
i tend not to chop my lawn like many people do. I mow it on the middle height. less chance for burnout in hot weather.

i find that if i fertilize in June and not mow to low it helps big time with staying green as long as its watered when its hot. the two best lawns in the neighborhood are mine and next door neighbors and many people have underground sprinkler systems. not me man, just lay the hoses out on the sides near the woods and let em spray.

not sure if the type of grass matters regarding striping ability.

I think the striping ability has a lot to do with at what height you cut the grass and the way the grain of the grass is growing. If you cut your grass at different heights, say you do all the grass at one height and then cut strips down at a slightly lower height you will get the striping effect. That just sounds like too much work for grass, I just say burn it in the summer and move on

to an effect height would matter as the higher you mow the darker the grass will be,not as close to the root. but only has to be mowed once. you are right that which way you mow has an effect on the shade of the stripe pattern.

the darker green is produced when i mow up, lighter down. the lines are produced from the mower wheels, when i use the bagger it weighs the mower down further into the grass and the lines are deeper.
finally rained yesterday.
i tell you though huge difference looking at burnt out grass its ugly and could potentially look like that for 1/2 the grass season.

not much work, fertilize once in June, mow weekly and throw the water on everyother day.

Here's a pic of my back yard . We just moved in about a month ago. It really nice to keep my boat behind the house.

Very Cool DukeDog!

How far are you from open water through the canals? How deep are the channels?

Sweetness dukedog, that's exactly what I want.

I'm gonna post mine here soon, I took some digi's with my dad's camera (specifically for this post, I might add), but it's so old and crappy, I couldn't download a driver for it off the net. SO I've gotta take it to his house and save them to disk.
I'll get them up shortly, just don't let the thread die.

Well it take me about 30 mins to get out from my house. The canals avg. about 10 feet deep. The channels are about 10 -20 feet with some shallower areas with low tide. I wish I had more time to use it but with just moving it seems that there is always something to do or fix.

I'll comment on mine here, it's on Ruffner Mtn.; across the street from a 1000 acre nature preserve. I put a roof on it, central heat and air, re did the electrical, the kitchen, etc. I also fenced in the back yard, the bright white spot (on the left in the pic) is actually red clay dirt, it used to be parking, until I fenced. THe crappy fence you see in the back left was a temporary pen. I took half of it down, I've been conveniently too busy (read: too lazy) to take the last 20 ft. down, besides it give me something to chain my houdini (read: escape artist) dog to. I need to put him up a run, but haven't yet, he's on a 20'lead W/ 270deg of play, so he's got plenty of room during the day until I get home. I have two rocking chairs on the screened porch, biodiversity there is amazing, american goldfinches, purple finches, house wrens, woodpeckers, ruby throat hummingbirds, etc. all manner of forest and clearing birds, I sit on my porch in the morning onthe weekends and watch the activity at my birdfeeder.
