Arrow Navy's new anti-submarine sonar & whales.

http://sfgate.com/comics/fiore/ (P.S. -- The link no longer takes you to the cartoon animation that applied to this topic. It simply takes you to Fiore's most recent cartoon, which has nothing at all to do with this thread.)

Too True, Too True.

THey've actually heard Whale songs from all the way across the ocean, so don't tell me a 215dB burst doesn't deafen those guys for hundreds of miles around.

It's a D@&^ shame that the Gov't gets to destroy the environment in the name of defense. (Not that I'm against defense of our country, mind you, I'm just of the opinion that the U.S Gov't should seek environmentally friendly solutions.)

Well, after that well documented incident where it was proven that navy sonar had damaged the inner ears of marine mammals causing them to beach themselves, the navy has been operating under new restrictive guidelines that require them to monitor their environment for marine mammals within a 1-mile radius of their sonar activities. If they detect marine mammals within a 1-mile radius, they must cease sending the signals.

I hope the whales have better luck at being detected than Japanese fishing vessels. Remember that sub that surfaced under that Japanese vessel a year or so ago killing several people, including a number of high school students? They were demonstrating their "capabilities" for some visiting civilian VIPs. Anyway, that same sub has subsequently been involved in a new collision with another vessel. In fact, that same sub has now collided with at least three different vessels. But they were "monitoring their environment" all the while.

You know what the government will do. They will keep on going just trying not to get caught causing the problem. They won't be looking as hard for marine mammals as they will witnesses and envornmentalist.
