Freshwater fish??
I don't think I ever posted there but wasn't there a Freshwater area?
Just today I was thinking about setting up a tank using fish from my area. Trout or large mouth bass with a few panfish. Over the summer I was checking out a fish hatchery run by the Pa Fish Commission. They had some tank raised Paddle fish. These things were really neat . I doubt if I could have talked them out of a few but they would have looked great in my 90 which is now empty.Anyone try something like this?? Bill |

I tried a "native species" tank several years ago with small freshwater fish I caught off my dock.
There were a few problems. First, the bioload from even a few of these fish (sunfish, small bass, small Northern Pike,) was too large for the filters to handle. Second, the predatory nature of some of these fish made it almost impossible to keep, as they even eat other specimens of their own species. Lastly, most of them required live food, like minnows, and it's hard to find adequate food in the winter. Give it a try, though. The fish are cheap or even free if you gather your own. You might hit on a good combination of fish if your tank is large enough and if you provide enough hiding spots. |
