Rare Trumpeter Swans
Once very rare, Trumpeter Swans are making a come-back in the northland. Here are four swans on the bay in front of my house this morning.

they are gorgeous, elegant birds. What is given the credit for their "come back"?

There are two main reasons for the return of the Trumpeter:
1) There has been an extensive nesting and stocking program in a wildlife refuge near here. The swans then disperse naturally and hopefully breed in new nesting ares. 2) Programs have been instituted to educate hunters on the differences between certain white geese and the swans. Occasionally, dead swans will show up with shotgun wounds, but many fewer than in the past. I love watching them in the morning while having a cup of coffee. |

Pretty cool, I am a closet bird watcher, I don't keep a list or anything, but enjoy their behavior, etc.

It's really neat to hear about successes in wildlife management especially with the Trumpeter. What a great bird to have around to enjoy in it's natural setting.
In my area it's wild turkeys. They have made a HUGE comeback. |

All four at once this AM.
You'll notice the overcast, gray skies in each picture. We will only rarely see the sun in the next 2 months.
These birds are huge. They dwarf the Canada geese that these seem to hang around with. |

Reinhold,
That is so cool! So you live right smack dab next to a lake? Great! ![]()

Excellent.
We have a pair of Golden Eagles that nested nearby last summer. I'm sorry I don't have pictures. |

wgscott---in the same wildlife refuge where the swans were reintroduced, there has been a large Bald Eagle program going on for years. There are Bald Eagles everywhere in the woods and around the lakes now.
I agree with you. Both swans and eagles are especially tasty stir fried in a little olive oil and garlic! Here is an immature Bald Eagle at the top of a nearby tree. |
