hey, im finally building that "super computer" i wanted last year, but im not sure what to do, go intel P4 northwood chipset, or AMD... I've never used AMD so i dont know how they compare. also, i never built a pc before what would i need to get a barebones system running (motherboard, etc...)
I got a whole wad of cash so $$'s not a problem mark |

Well you'll need a good motherboard, sound car, video card, I'm assuming you already have housing for everything. Hard drive, RAM, CD-Rom, or you could just get a burner to double as a CD-rom drive. You'll also need to see what kind of fan you need for your P4 chip. If you run that thing for more than 5 minutes without a fan it will fry like white fish on a skillet. I'd look into quiet fans, I just overhauled my computer this summer and I tell you there is nothing worse than hearing that damn fan run 24/7. You have a power source and everything right? I'm trying to think of all the essentials. I think that's it.

I am a huge fan of AMD. I have had less problems with my most recent system (my first AMD) than will all of my previous Intels. I run it over-clocked with a decent (not great) fan and have yet to have any problem at all. Its cheap, fast, and reliable.
I'd second going for a "quiet" fan. The fan I initially threw on there was pretty loud, and drove me crazy. I swear it gave me tinitus to be in the same room with that system for more than a hour. I say AMD all the way. If I was building a system right now I'd go with the ASUS A7V8X mobo, Athlon XP 2600+, 1.024 GB of 333mhz DDR, Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum, GeForce4 Ti4600, Deskstar 120gb HD, and a DVD-RW. that'd probably suffice for me for the next few weeks. ![]() -Perry |

You working as a camp counselor is way scarier than you peddling drugs on your summer vacation! |

I agree with Perry all the way except that would not be a cheap computer by no means more like my dream computer

Perry has described a great computer for you. The only change I would make would be to swap the TI4600 video card for a new ATI Radeon 9700 Pro. Of course this may put you way over your budget.

Perry or Andrew:
How much would a set-up like that cost? |

Here are some rough figures of Perry's configuration with my video card.
Motherboard $125 Proccessor $250 Video Card $350 Ram $300 Sound Card $190 Hard Drive $200 DVD RW $225 -------------------------- $1640 Some of these can be purchased for more or less, but these are close numbers. You also need to figure in some money for a case, cooling fans, Heatsink, power supply (probably a 500 watt for this rig). keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers, printer, network card (or modem if you haven't joined the world of broadband) and anything else you might need. That is really not a bad price for a computer that is top of the line (at least for a couple of weeks )With a computer that nice, I would feel guilty using anything less than a 19 inch flat panel monitor, and the best speakers you can afford. You would also want to save a couple hundred for games. UT 2K3 would be awsome on this computer. ![]() Andrew

FWIW, I've had nothing but great service at www.Tigerdirect.com.
No hassles when returning merchandise and the parts arrive relatively fast. Prices are pretty decent also. Check out the liquid cooled cases...
