Yes, it's a sad story but I submitted it to the Darwin Awards site anyway: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...7/BA167041.DTL
Does that mean I'm insensitive and politically incorrect? I feel for the victims and their families but this has got to rank right up there with the dumbest human tricks ever. ![]() P.S. -- For those unfamiliar with the Darwin Awards: What is a Darwin Award? The Darwin Awards honor those who improve our gene pool by removing themselves from it in really stupid ways.

Stupid stupid stupid. I often wonder how people manage to live as long as they do, given such defective judgement. Yes, I feel very bad for their families. They feel deep grief over losing their loved one, but also anger at them for doing such a stupid action that caused such horrible injury or took their own life.
I think it's a good candidate for the prestigious Darwin Award, sad as it is.

Given that a basic element of the Darwin Award involves one's removing him/herself from the gene pool, it's hard to fault you for insensitivity in bringing a case to our attention.
My "favorite" personal experience with a someone of "finalist" potential was a guy I saw in the ER who decided to kill himself by stabbing himself in the heart with an 8" filet knife. When contemplating where to plunge the knife, he remembered back to the grade school Pledge of Allegiance and to where he thought his heart was, based on his old teacher's instructions to "place your hand over your heart." Of course, he wound up stabbing himself in the mid-left chest, just left and above where his heart really was. When he asked me what went wrong and why he didn't die, I was faced with the ethical dilemma of whether to point out to him where his heart really was, in which case he might succeed the next time, or lie and tell him he was just lucky. Of course, I opted for honesty and told him he'd missed, thanks to his old teacher. |

Here is a story that I submitted a couple of years ago. This happened in my home state (I am so proud
) It was on the Darwin awards site for awhile.I am a firm believer that many darwin award winners' last words are "Hey, watch this!" ![]()
