Florida in the 2000 election was a great example of votes mattering. I know it seems fruitless, but hang in there and keep voting.

I guess it matters exactly where the one vote is. On the Supreme Court, one vote matters a lot a lot of the time.

Schrocat,
I see that you still have less than 1% of the membership that has voted in your silly little avatar poll. ![]() How did it get back to the front page? Did someone new actually vote or something? California has a greater percentage of the population actually running for governor in the recall election right now? ![]() In fact, with 193 candidates for governor on the ballot, they're thinking of calling up Palm Beach County for advice. Pity Pat Buchanan's not a resident of California, I'm sure his name would have been on there at least once. If Ah-nult is elected, that will make two members of the cast of Predator to have been elected governor of a state. Not even Bedtime for Bonzo can top that. ![]()

Ninong, I think that number is now closer to 250. I took my number of 193 from yesterday's SF Chronicle but even that number is pure speculation based on another report in today's paper attributed to the Secretary of State: "While 96 candidates have qualified, there were still 99 more waiting verification of their papers, Secretary of State Kevin Shelley said Monday. A final list is expected to be completed by Wednesday." If that report is correct, the maximum number would be 195 candidates if all qualified. It's still a circus any way you look at it. I didn't think California would ever be able to top Florida in the election follies category but this whole thing is taking on a life of its own. And the media is giving Ah-nult tons and tons of free exposure that may help him or may hurt him. You never know about the media, especially people like Ruppert Murdock and his little talking drones. I was passing through the room while my brother-in-law was getting his daily fix of "fair and balanced" news from Murdock's lackeys and I was surprised to hear someone making seemingly admiring comments about Ah-nult. Surely they are getting his screen persona mixed up with the real person. I'm sure Murdock or Rush Limbaugh will explain the difference shortly. This is going to be a great spectacle. I can't wait. We have Ah-nult double-crossing his pal Dick Riordan and running after promising not to run, we have Bill Simon running with the backing of the conservative wing of the Republican party, we have Arianna Huffington running just for the publicity, we have Peter Ueberroth running because he thinks he received a message from on high that his services were needed to save the state, we have Larry Flynt running because he has more money than all the rest of them put together and he enjoys stirring the pot every now and then, and we have the White House going crazy trying to figure out how to manage the whole mess without alienating large segments of Dubya's base. Remember, California is not Texas and it's not the rest of the country, and it's certainly not Bush-friendly territory except for Orange County. Right now we have Gray Davis praying that Bill and Hillary Clinton will campaign with him and Ah-nult praying that Dubya and Dick Cheney will stay the hell out of the state. Ah-nult will be the leading contender because of his persona and Dubya will be faced with the choice of backing him in spite of protests from the right, especially the Christian conservative right, or keeping a low profile and running the risk of Davis defeating the recall. The whole thing is crazy. ![]()

Ninong,
Did you see that Arnold has re-tooled his campaign team (as of this am). He now has Pete Wilson's entire campaign staff (or a big chunk of them anyway... ). They are apparently all "known" names in CA politics and also are all very known/associated with Prop whatever (that Arnold supported...) which approved denying social services, education, etc to the children of undocumented/illigal immigrants. Arnold supported it when it passed first time around. The Hispanic press has been ALL over this the last few days, reminding people that Arnold supported the measure. It ABSOLUTELY is a circus... ![]() |

That was Prop. 187 and it was Pete Wilson's idea. Yes, Ah-nult supported it. Almost all of it was eventually ruled unconstitutional.
Ah-nult used some of Pete's guys before so it's no surprise that he and Pete would form an alliance of sorts. Pete is pro-choice, as is Ah-nult, and to the left of most of the other California Republicans, except for maybe Dick Riordan, who isn't running now that Ah-nult broke his promise not to run this time. Ah-nult was pretty smart to take advantage of this recall election because his chances of winning the Republican Party's nomination were not all that good. Look at what happened the last time around. They rebuffed Dubya's choice, Dick Riordan, as too moderate and nominated Bill Simon, the only candidate Gray Davis could easily defeat in spite of his sorry approval numbers. It should be interesting but I don't know if Gray Davis can reverse the recall support numbers. Right now it looks like about 59% of the people are in favor of the recall and if the recall passes, Ah-nult will most probably have more votes than any other candidate. I think he can count on a good 20% of the vote based strictly on his persona, regardless of his positions, because so many people really vote on charisma and not policy positions. There is still a fairly good chance that organized labor will stop concentrating all of their efforts on defeating the recall and spend some of their money promoting the idea that if the recall passes, people should vote for the Democrat, Cruz Bustamante, the current Lieutenant Governor. I have a feeling that whoever wins this thing, assuming the recall succeeds, may do it with less than 40% of the vote. If the Democrats can't muster 40% of the vote in a state like California, then they are in big trouble. They would have had this thing in the bag if they had simply conceded defeat on trying to keep Gray Davis in office and simply put Diane Feinstein on the ballot. Now they may be faced with the prospect of admitting defeat on Davis and pushing Bustamante as the alternative. That may not sell.

Everytime I try to listen to the news about this whole mess I develop a splitting headache and now I understand why.
Circus indeed, however, Regan was an actor as well and look what happened... ![]()

Looks like it's finally official. There will be ONLY 135 gubernatorial candidates on the Oct. 7th. recall election ballot in California:
Sacramento -- State officials announced late Wednesday that California's unprecedented recall election will have 135 candidates to replace Gov. Gray Davis on the Oct. 7 ballot.

I have decided to reserve the use of Avatars for Contributing Members only, along with other "goodies".
At this time, the only way to gain the use of Avatars is to become a Contributing Member which helps us continue the operation of Reefland.com.For those of you who wish not to view avatars that users have, you can remove them from your view in the Options of you User Control Panel. Scott Z. |
